American Idol contestant apologises to judges for behaviour

Katy Perry consoles contestant after she gets upset during apology

Nutsa Buzaladze blew the stage away this week on American Idol as she sang her own rendition of Tina Turner’s Proud Mary.

But this wasn’t before she quickly apologised to the judges, including Katy Perry, for last week’s incident during the duet stage.

Her partner Carina DeAngelo mentioned immediately before the performance that Nutsa had slept through rehearsals, leaving them unprepared.

Nutsa ended up moving forward while her duet partner, Carina, did not, with Perry telling the singer she needs “more grace” for the coming shows.

Of the duet performance, Perry stated: “I just think the energy was broken between both of you and so I think you couldn’t give each other the energy you both needed. That you both deserved.

“I think you’re both better than that performance.”

This week, in her opening interview, Nutsa said: “Duet round was the hardest emotional experience I’ve had in my life… ever.

“I am not this person. I have never been this person.”

Once she met the judges (Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan) on Sunday, the singer opened with an apology, directed at Perry, admitting she felt “really bad” about what she had done.

She explained: “I wanted to tell my side of the story and I felt so bad I was frozen. I didn’t want to bring negative energy, so I didn’t say anything.

“I didn’t speak up because I didn’t want to cry on stage. After I left the stage I was just destroyed. So I wanted to apologize for that.”

Perry immediately got up to console the contestant, while also explaining her “grace” comment last week.

She said: “That is great. That’s so wonderful and Nutsa, what I meant by grace is that it’s OK to be determined, ambitious, edgy, and strong but also with grace.

“I really relate to you because I know what it’s like to be a strong woman… to want to be strong and to never break and feel like nothing can ever get to me but that’s not real.

“You’re a real person with a big heart and a big talent.”

Nutsa also addressed the issue in a lengthy Instagram post, explaining that she was exhausted from a long flight but hopes for the future “you will get to know me and my personality better”.

Perry’s comments toward contestants have received major scrutiny after she was previously accused of “mum-shaming” Sarah Beth Liebe, who later stepped back from the competition.

Liebe told judges she had three children with Perry’s face showing her shocked reaction.

Liebe said: “If Katy lays on the table I think I’m gonna pass out.”

Perry responded: “Honey, you’ve been laying on the table too much.”

Liebe eventually quit the show to go back home to her children, after admitting numerous times that she found Perry’s remarks “hurtful” and “embarrassing”.
