American Idol fans demand Katy Perry apology

American Idol: Katy Perry misleads a contestant

Fireworks singer Katy Perry and American Idol judge has once again been criticised by fans for disparaging remarks against a contestant.

This week, the pop star panelist was still disappointed after her favourite contestant Elijah McCormick was voted off by viewers on April 17.

Perry was still distracted by the results during Sunday night’s show and couldn’t help making her feelings clear after fan-favourite Wé Ani’s performance of Adele’s Skyfall.

“Wé, oh my god,” she said. “I’m just so shook right now.

“First of all, shook by the results, and I’m also shook by that song is so dramatic. (sic)

“There’s so much drama going through my body right now I need a nap. But the truth is, America, you guys have the votes.

“You’re the ones voting and if you’re not voting, you’re not using your voice. Your faves aren’t safe. So from now on, vote for who you want to see in the Top 12.”

The judge has come under fire for her comments with several American Idol fans taking to social media to demand an apology for not giving a response to Ani’s performance.

Peter Meister said: “Katy Perry needs to apologise to Wé Ani immediately!

“So dismissive because she didn’t get her choice! It’s called American Idol for a reason it’s America’s choice, not yours!”

To which Michele Miller replied: “I felt she was extremely insulting myself. P****d me off. Very disrespectful.”

Mark J Lewis said: “100%. And then she doubled down scolding people for not voting. Wow.

“That was completely unprofessional, disrespectful and… NOT NICE. I’M REALLY DISAPPOINTED IN KATY.”

@bln231 fumed: “Very unfair to Wé Ani, the way the judges ended the show.”

@KathyL007 wrote: “It was awful. Judges owed her an apology. She showed a lot of grace facing them.”

And @cpj0303 said: “Normally, nothing Katy Perry says bothers me as she’s just known for her sense of humour and quips.

“But her dissing of Wé Ani? THAT was just rude. Should she be fired? No. Does she owe Wé Ani an apology? Definitely.”

The pop star has already found herself in hot water this season after her comments towards short-lived contestant Sara Beth Liebe were considered ‘mom-shaming’.

Perry pretended to faint during Liebe’s audition when the 25-year-old singer revealed she was a mother of three.

Liebe later decided to exit the show to look after her children and went on to call out Perry’s “mom-shaming” remarks on TikTok.

Express.co.uk has reached out to Perry’s reps and ABC for comment.

American Idol continues Sundays and Mondays on ABC in the US.
