Antiques Roadshow guest gobsmacked after ‘scruffy’ Rolex makes huge profit

Early Rolex watch gets valuation on the Antiques Roadshow

Antiques Roadshow expert Richard Price left one guest lost for words after she made a staggering profit on a Rolex watch she had bought for her husband.

The guest exclaimed: “That’s more than I paid for it” after Richard shared what the 20-year-old watch would fetch at auction.

When chatting about the history of the watch, the guest admitted she wasn’t even sure if the Rolex was a real one.

She began: “So this is my husband’s Rolex watch, or I believe it might be a Rolex watch, but I’m a little dubious.”

“So why are you dubious?” Richard asked as the guest replied: “Because we bought it from a dealer a number of years ago.

“You’re never really sure, are you? And there’s nothing to actually say Rolex other than the dial.”

Richard was quick to reassure the guest as he opened up the watch to see if it was an authentic Rolex.

He shared: “Okay, well, let’s look at the dial initially, it says Rolex.

“It’s got some nice Roman numerals and you’ve got a small subsidiary seconds. The dial appears to have been repainted…not very well done.

“So you’ve had it 20 years? Nowadays if you repainted a dial like that it would lose a fair amount of its value, but back then it didn’t matter quite as much.

“Let’s have a look. That should just lift up like that and you get a better look at the dial and you will see what I mean.

“It’s not been the nicest restoration. It also looks as if it’s been spray painted with a clear lacquer…probably before you bought it, it was rather scruffy, so they redid the dial.”

After turning over the watch, the expert confirmed it was a real Rolex.

Richard went on: “The case is Hallmarked London. 1920, so actually, rather a nice object, isn’t it?
