Coronation Street favourite to make return five years after hostage horror

Coronation Street: Gemma is caught in Rita’s house with Henry

Coronation Street’s Henry Newton (played by George Banks) is set to reprise his role in upcoming scenes, five years after leaving the ITV soap.

Joining the cobbles as Gemma Winter’s (Dolly-Rose Campbell) boyfriend from 2017 to 2018, the last time viewers saw Henry was when he was taken hostage by two gangsters in the back of a car.

While many were left to wonder whether or not he survived the terrifying kidnapping, it seems as though Henry is alive and well.

Official spoilers for next week reveal Gemma could face a hefty fine from social services after falling asleep while looking after Bertie Osbourne (Rufus Morgan-Smith), which resulted in him taking her medication.

Fretting about her financial struggle, she confides in Jenny Connor (Sally Ann Matthews), who suggests she speaks to her ex Henry as he’s looking for staff.

However, it’s not yet known if she decides to take Jenny’s advice as she doesn’t think her new husband Chesney Brown (Sam Aston) would approve.

If Gemma ends up working for her old flame again, could a reconnection be on the cards?

Henry first started dating Gemma in 2017 as a cruel dare with his friends, although feelings developed and he reunited with her the following year.

During their brief romance, Henry attempted to buy The Rovers Return, although they were beaten to it by Jenny and Johnny Connor (Richard Hawley).

He then tried to cause trouble by threatening to sue the new owners over a fake broken arm, to try and help with his money worries.

Although it looked as though lies and scheming caught up to him as the heir was run out of town and was thrown into the back of Chesney’s stolen car by kidnappers.

Will Coronation Street fans see a new side to the bad boy half a decade after his sudden exit? Or is he still up to no good?

The news of George’s return comes after fan favourite Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) made a sudden exit last week.

She was tracked down by her estranged drug addict daughter Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney), looking to reunite with her son Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall).

Although Evelyn has told her grandson his mother is dead, she’s agreed to help Cassie get clean before introducing them.

Getting into the back of a taxi on Friday evening, the duo were going to stay in a flat while Cassie went cold turkey as they were unable to get the funds for rehab.

It’s not yet known when the duo will return to the ITV serial drama.

Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV from 8pm.
