Coronation Street sees sudden exit for beloved character after heartbreak

Coronation Street: Ryan leaving Weatherfield

Coronation Street’s Elaine Jones (played by Paula Wilcox) finally began to realise how many lies Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce) had been telling her and ended their relationship and engagement.

Since his arrival last year, Stephen has killed three people who have stood in his way of getting what he wants and Elaine was almost his fourth.

He first tried to kill her by swapping out her medication, which left her unconscious but she luckily survived.

Stephen’s next plan was to whisk her away for a fatal trip to the mountains, but he was stopped in his tracks after Elaine revealed to Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine) he’d faked life insurance documents.

Furious that Stephen had been playing his mother and his suspicions were right all along, Tim stepped in and confronted him.

Stephen ended up hitting his head and falling unconscious with Tim and Elaine fearful he’d been killed.

He was later found by his nephew David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) outside of the barbers and was rushed to hospital, surviving his minor injuries.

On Monday, Elaine made a sudden exit from the cobbled after rejecting her Tai Chi instructor Gerry Northrop (Graham Turner).

She later told Tim and Sally Metcalfe (Sally Dynevor) that she was heading to Scarborough to be with her friend for a while and get away from Stephen.

Tim and Sally emotionally bid farewell to Elaine as she got into the taxi and headed for her new home, at least for now.

However, she wondered whether she should warn Jenny Connor (Sally Ann Matthews), who Elaine knew Stephen had a crush on, about what kind of man he is but left before she could say anything.

Paula recently opened up about her character’s relationship with Stephen and whether or not she thought she could die at his hands.

Speaking to Express.co.uk and other press, Paula said: “If she wanted any more proof, this is certain proof.

“He’s forged her signature on a document which means that if she dies he’ll make a lot of money.

“Then you realise, of course, he’s been talking about money none stop, telling her, ‘Don’t sell your house, keep your house, keep your money’.

“Give me some money so that I can buy the factory and then I can pay you back’. So much of what he’s talked to her about is money, money, money, money, money.

“And there it is in black and white. Her signature. She thinks, ‘I didn’t sign that, somebody has forged my signature and the only person that it can be is the one that I loved and trusted.'”

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8pm on ITV.
