Coronation Street star wins Strictly Christmas special after perfect score

It's certainly a Christmas to remember for Coronation Street star Alexandra Mardell, who has been crowned the winner of this year’s Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special, alongside her professional partner Kai Widdrington.

Today's Christmas special saw six new celebrities take to the dance floor to celebrate the festivities, with Alex and partner Kai performing a Quickstep to Sleigh Ride by Ronettes, with which the received a score of 40 from the judges.

The line-up included, Alexandra Mardell and Kai Widdrington, Larry Lamb and Nadiya Bychkova, Rosie Ramsey and Neil Jones, George Webster and Amy Dowden, Ricky Haywood-Williams and Luba Mushtuk and Nicola Roberts and Giovanni Pernice.

Upon her win, Alex said: "I am so shocked, I cannot thank you enough. I’m so happy about that, I did that for you [Kai] as well, I can’t believe it."

Alex is best known for her role as Emma Brooker in Coronation Street, for which she won British Soap Award for Best Newcomer.

She was also nominated for both Best Newcomer and Serial Drama Performance at the 2019 National Television Awards.

And while she and Kai danced to success on Christmas, the professional dancer wasn't quite so lucky for this year's main season.

Paired with Loose Women panellist Kaye Adams, Kai's 2022 Strictly journey was rather short, with Kaye being the first celeb eliminated from the series.

This year's Strictly champ was announced last Saturday (December 17), with TV presenter and wildlife cameraman, Hamza Yassin lifted the Glitterball Trophy with his pro partner Jowita Przystał as they celebrated their incredible achievement.

Upon learning he had won the show, Hamza broke down into tears as he admitted: "Words can't describe how I feel. I want to thank one person in particular, Jowita, you are an angel disguised as a human being. You're amazing."

He sweetly added: "Thank you to everyone out there for voting for us, this is the best thing that's ever happened to me."

This marked professional dancer Jowita's first win of the show, who said of dancing Hamza: "I think, just so you know, anything is possible.

"He is just the proof, that anything is possible and he came here on this show with no dancing experience – he made it, he worked hard, and he made it. I'm so proud of you and I would love to thank everybody."

Prior to his win, the presenter had topped the Strictly leaderboard an incredible five times and had avoided the dreaded dance-off the whole series.

During the final, Hamza had to perform a routine chosen by the judges, his own favourite dance and, finally, a show dance.
