Coronation Streets Roy Cropper has sleepless nights after new arrival
Coronation Street: Ray Crosby confronts Roy Cropper
Over the past few weeks, ITV viewers witnessed Roy Cropper (played by David Neilson) change his ways as he became addicted to his mobile phone after years of being a technophobe. Now, Coronation Street fans are about to see the long-running character have another big change in his life with the arrival of a newcomer
When Roy’s friend Melvyn arrives at the Café with his dog Freddie, the duo and pooch set off to visit a local bat roost.
However, the day didn’t go fully to plan as Roy later returns back to the cafe clutching the dog without his friend.
Explaining the situation to Shona (Julia Goulding) and Nina (Mollie Gallagher), he reveals while on the trip Melvyn took a funny turn.
With his friend having to go to the hospital, nobody was left to look after Freddie which is why he’s now in Roy’s care.
Although his act of kindness later comes back to bite him when he appears exhausted speaking to Shona admitting Freddie kept him up all night barking.
Confiding in his friend Evelyn (Maureen Lipman) Coronation Street viewers will learn Melvyn has sadly died with Roy now inheriting Freddie permanently.
However, after the sleepless night he’s faced with him, Roy tells Shona he’s going to drop the dog off at the shelter, believing it’s for the best.
With Freddie now out of his care, Roy confessed to Evelyn what he’s done, leaving her horrified.
Later on, the cafe owner has a change of heart, revealing to Shona and Evelyn that Freddie will be coming back to live with him on a permanent basis.
Pleased with the decision, Evelyn reckons her friend has made the right decision, aware of the happiness a pet can bring.
Although Roy hasn’t got the best track record with animals following the sudden death of Evelyn’s dog Cerberus, which he was responsible for.
When her long-standing companion refused to eat his food, Evelyn was left concerned for her pet’s wellbeing.

It wasn’t until her grandson Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) started to worry that Evelyn made the decision to take Cerberus to the vet.
With the professional suggestion the dog has food poisoning, the pair were stunned at how this could’ve happened.
Seeing his friend in distress, Roy was guilt-ridden as he confessed to dropping an Eccles cake which he feared the dog may have eaten.
Furious, Evelyn scolded her friend and warned if anything happened to Cerberus, she’d never forgive him.
However, when the dog later died after suffering from kidney failure, Evelyn’s friendship was soon restored.
Speaking to Digital Spy about the dog’s death in the soap, actress Maureen said: “I really liked Cerberus, Boss is his name and he’s a lovely dog, seriously sweet-natured and an incredibly beautiful hound.
“Gorgeous. It was as if he had an inkling that he was being written out! He was a bit subdued for a couple of days. He was valiant and that made it even sadder.”
Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITVX and ITV1 from 8pm.
