Corrie Millie Gibsons life – real age, co-star bonds, NTAs slip-up, glam snaps

Coronation Street fans were delighted in 2022, when Kelly Neelan star Millie Gibson was announced as the new Doctor Who companion.

Millie will join the beloved BBC sci-fi series as Ruby Sunday, alongside Ncuti Gatwa's doctor, in adventures due to be broadcast later this year.

She follows in the footsteps of past companion stars including Billie Piper, Jenna Coleman and Freema Aygeman, who have all appeared in the rebooted series.

On the 18th anniversary of the show's return in 2005, Daily Star takes a closer look inside Millie Gibson's life as she prepares to step into the TARDIS on Doctor Who.

Real age

Coronation Street icon Millie landed her first acting role in an episode of Love, Lies and Records, before appearing in CBBC programme Jamie Johnson.

From there she appeared in ITV drama Butterfly, alongside fellow soap icons including Brookside's Anna Friel and former Hollyoaks star Emmett J Scanlan.

However she is most famous for playing troubled teen Kelly Neelan in Coronation Street between 2019 to 2022.

Her cobbles character was caught up in huge storylines including being falsely accused of the murder of Seb Franklin.

The actress completed the Great Manchester Run for The Sophie Lancaster Foundation in 2021, following the soap's harrowing hate crime storyline inspired by the real-life story of goth Sophie Lancaster who was murdered in 2007.

In total she raised more that £1,500 for the charity which educates and provides training in order to tackle hate crime.

Millie's character Kelly also faced storylines including death of her mum and the murder of dad Rick by Gary Windass.

Despite playing a young teen on the soap though, Millie was actually 18 years old by the time she departed the cobbles, following an explosive on-screen rooftop showdown between her character, Gary and her late dad's criminal associates.

In the same year as her soap departure, Millie also won Best Young Performer at the British Soap Awards 2022.

The Coronation Street Twitter account congratulated the star on her win, saying: "A massive congratulations to Millie Gibson, what an amazing talent," followed by love heart emojis.

Coronation Street co-star bonds

While appearing on Coronation Street, Millie built close bonds with her co-stars.

Actors including Dev Alahan icon Jimmi Harkishin, Craig Tinker star Colson Smith and Asha Alahan actress Tanisha Gorey joined Millie to celebrate her 18th birthday – with the actress sharing sweet snaps of the cast together on Instagram.

Looking radiant in a red dress with her blonde locks pouring past her shoulders, Millie posed for a gorgeous snap with Tanisha.

The two have a close bond off-screen, with Millie joking in one Instagram post that Tanisha was "The Mrs", while Tanisha uploaded a selfie of the pair together captioned: "My little love."

Meanwhile in 2021, Millie sent fans wild when she posed for an adorable snap alongside Corey Grant actor Max Evans during an evening out.

The two could be seen sitting in a booth at a restaurant, while Millie looked at Max, who was smiling for the camera.

She looked radiant as she posed for the photo in a knitted halter neck top and trilby hat, next to Max who was wearing a stylish white, long sleeved shirt.

Millie posted the photo on her Instagram page, with the caption "Partner in crime."

The photo delighted fans, with one saying "this is the most iconic photo ever."

It wasn't just fans who shared their love for the photo though, with many of their fellow Coronation Street cast members commenting on the social media post.

Georgia Taylor, who plays Toyah Battersby in Coronation Street said "cuties", while Kel Allen, who played Laura Neelan in the ITV soap said, "Hope you're having the best night cutie pies."

NTA's 'blunder'

At the National Television Awards 2022, Millie was caught on camera appearing to be swearing after Coronation Street Max Turner actor Paddy Beaver won the Rising Star Award.

Millie appeared say an expletive as she celebrated Paddy's win, with the young Max actor looking equally as surprised as he took to the stage saying he "hadn't prepared a speech," as he did not think he would beat other stars nominated in the category.

However, Millie soon took to Instagram to address the on-screen blunder, saying that she did not swear during the ceremony.

She explained that she was: "proud that I didn't drop the f bomb at all."

Doctor Who companion

During Children In Need 2022, it was announced that Millie Gibson would be joining Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa as the latest companion in Doctor Who.

Millie will play Ruby Sunday opposite Ncuti's doctor and spoke about her excitement for the role at the time of the announcement, saying: "Whilst still being in total disbelief, I am beyond honoured to be cast as the Doctor’s companion.

"It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have travelled in before me. And what better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side, I just can’t wait to get started."

She has since revealed the unusual moment she got the call to say she had won the role too.

Speaking to Doctor Who Magazine, she said: "I went to get a spray tan for the NTAs, and I was in the room waiting to dry off when I got this WhatsApp call, asking me to join the call with all my agents.

"I picked up the phone and they were like, ‘Are you good at keeping secrets?’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ They said, ‘Are you really good at keeping secrets? Cos you’ve got it.'"

Glam snaps

Away from the limelight, Millie tends to keep her personal life private and it is not known if the star is single or in a relationship.

However she does delight her followers with glam snaps on Instagram.

Millie looked radiant as she posed in a tiny yellow mini dress, with her blond locks pouring down her shoulders, as she captioned the snap: "Lovely Christmas do in April."

It was not just her fans that adored the photograph, but her Corrie co-stars too, with Tanisha Gorey commenting: "Wowza you're too much for me."

Meanwhile, Kel Allen added: "Bloody love you Babba," followed by a yellow love heart.
