Coronation Street star Sam Aston has opened up about his struggled at school after he landed his role as Chesney Brown on the ITV soap.

The loveable star first joined the ITV Cobbles back in 2003 at the age of 10 and he quickly became a fan-favourite on the show.

He and his long-running character are known by many as the cheeky chap with the red hair who somehow manages to find trouble wherever he goes.

After twenty years on the soap his character has blossomed into a fun-loving dad who has face a number of challenging storylines over the years.

Now, the 29-year-old actor has opened up about what it was like in the early years on the soap and how he has managed growing up in the public eye on the show.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star and other publications, the dad-of-two confessed that he struggled to transition from primary school to high school because of the character he plays on the soap.

He told us: “I can remember when I left primary school and I went to high school because you’re already settled at primary school and you’ve got your friends.

“I was a little worried because I was going to a high school that none of my friends were going to. It was a performing arts school and it was a little bit further away.

“When I first went to high school I remember being really, really nervous because I didn’t want to stand out and just wanted to blend in.

“But going in as Chesney, you feel like you’ve got a bit of a target on your back,” he admitted.

Luckily the actor didn’t suffer in silence for long after he found his life-long friends which he partly puts down to his character on the soap being so likeable.

He went on: “I’ve been lucky, I’ve had quite a breeze really. I think it’s because I play such a nice character, such a nice guy.

“Maybe if I was a bit of an idiot then yeah, maybe I would have had a bit more of a tough time but that’s it isn’t it? Chesney is such an easy-going nice guy.”

When asked what fans like to ask him about when they bump into him in the street, he confessed that he still gets asked about his childhood dog Schmeichel.

Sam explained: “Bless him Schmeichel died on the show years ago but I still get it now. It’s transition now from ‘Hey Chesney, where’s your big dog?’ to ‘Hey Chesney, where’s the quads? Are they at home?’ so still really nice things all-round.”

His character Chesney is arguably about to cross off another life-changing milestone on the Cobbles as he prepares to tie the knot to his wife-to-be Gemma Winter next week.
