EastEnders fans were left shedding a tear on the latest instalment of the soap as Sonia Fowler ushered three heart-breaking words to Dot Branning as she was laid to rest.

As viewers watched the cast gather for the iconic character’s funeral, Sonia stole the hearts or viewers when she gave a touching eulogy and finished by stating “I love you.”

“Natalie Cassidy is an amazing actress though. I'm so emotional. # EastEnders,” gushed one viewer.

“Feels like not only a goodbye to Dot but a goodbye to June going to be a mess by the end of tonight’s episode,@ added a second.

Another rushed: "This tribute #eastenders Dot will forever live on in Eastenders. June and Dot were true icons."

"Sorry. Anyone else crying while watching Dot’s funeral? #dotcotton #EastEnders," added another

In her final scenes on the BBC series, Dot left a voicemail to say she was going to Ireland to visit her grandson Charlie.

Show bosses made the decision to kill her character off when actress June Brown sadly passed away in real life back in February at the age of 95.

Executive Producer Chris Kershaw admitted that while she was alive, June did not want Dot to be killed off.

He told The Sun: “She did of course know that when she did leave us, it was the right thing to do.

“After some time, we couldn't put it off much longer. We spoke to June's family who knew it was what she would have wanted,”

In a tribute to her family, Chris invited June’s daughters Sophie, Nim and Billy asked to be in the emotional scene.

He added: “June's children Nim, Sophie and Billy knew what EastEnders meant to their mother, so much so they requested to attend Dot's funeral to say their goodbyes.”

Actress Milly Zero, who plays Dot's granddaugher Dotty, previously admitted that while filming the scenes the cast cried “real tears” as they came together for the incredible funeral episode.

She told The Sun: “It was such an emotional day. We cried real tears during filming because it really is such a beautiful tribute to her. There's elements of the episode that will make you laugh.

“June was always a bit mischievous on set and would often change the words of the script but that was just her.

“She would have loved seeing us all come together for the episode. I feel so proud to play her granddaughter it really is a dream role. We will always miss her.”
