EastEnders star's new role spookily echoes Phillip Schofield scandal
EastEnders star Rita Simons has just completed a new project which bears similarities to the This Morning scandal involving Phillip Schofield.
Schofield, 61, exited the ITV daytime programme last week before admitting to an affair with a much younger male colleague, stepping down from the channel with ‘immediate affect’.
The Dancing On Ice presenter was subsequently dropped by his agent of 35 years as a result and will no longer host the British Soap Awards, which would’ve been his last public commitment.
He has also been dropped as a Prince’s Trust ambassador.
Rita Simons, who is best known to UK audiences for her work as Roxy Mitchell in EastEnders, took to social media in the wake of the news to reveal that the project that she’s working on is eerily rather similar to what’s been in the headlines about This Morning.
‘Just shot this film,’ she wrote on Twitter, sharing a picture of herself with various cast and crew members. ‘About a TV presenter…a national treasure…Whose life and career suddenly turns into one almighty, disaster of monstrous proportions.
‘I thought I was filming ‘fiction’ but this weekend has made me wonder.’
The 46-year-old star recently delighted audiences with a return to EastEnders, playing Roxy for a single episode as a figment of daughter Amy’s imagination.
Roxy, as viewers know, was killed off with sister Ronnie (Samantha Womack) back in 2017, in what as undoubtedly one of the most controversial soap decisions of all time.
Fans were outraged that both characters were killed off, with many a campaign having been started by viewers to bring the iconic duo back, despite the sisters technically being dead.
