Emmerdale village theories – name change, characters wiped out and Meena return

Emmerdale celebrated its 50th anniversary this month – but sadly many fan favourites have lost their lives in the devastating storm.

The storm has seen the deaths of Harriet and Liv, as well as damage to the village, as the residents continue to deal with the fall out of the weather disaster.

However, fans have taken to social media to discuss the future of Emmerdale – both for the village and the residents.

As Emmerdale's 50th anniversary celebrations continue, Daily Star takes a look at the fan theories surrounding the future of Emmerdale village.

Village name change

Emmerdale fans have taken to social media and viewer forums to debate whether the soap will change its name after the 50th anniversary month comes to an end – much like the village of Beckindale was originally renamed after a fateful plane crash.

Emmerdale village was known as Beckindale until 1994, with Emmerdale only originally referring to the farm when the soap aired as Emmerdale Farm.

Taking to Reddit, one user jokingly suggested that Emmerdale could be renamed Dingledale in reference to its biggest family, saying: “After the plane crash they renamed Beckindale in honour of the Sugden's farm, now the focus has moved, surely this is what the show should be called after the coming natural disaster?”

Another Reddit user was quick to explain: "They only renamed the village so they could keep the name of the show."

“The focus of the show has always been wherever Emmerdale is. It was focused on the residents of Emmerdale Farm and their friends (1972-1989) then the residents of Emmerdale Farm and everyone they knew (1989-1994), then the residents of Emmerdale Farm and Emmerdale village (1994-2002) and finally just Emmerdale village (2002-present).”

However, with all the chaos that has ensued following the storm, including damage to the village and multiple deaths, on fan said: "Breaking news, from next week Emmerdale village is named Armageddon."

Emmerdale fans want more animals

Eagle-eyed fans have noticed that despite being a farm, Emmerdale rarely shows any scenes with animals that inhabit the countryside around them.

Some viewers have taken to Twitter to say that the storm might be the time for the village to change and start including more animals, with one asking: "Can I ask where were the cows? That's what we all watching for let's be honest?"

"This is my most favourite programme that I look forward to watching. But why haven't you got a dog in the village? You've the farm, horses, cows, sheep, but why no dogs? I find this strange in a small farming village," added a second.

When Emmerdale bosses teased that there will be cow stampede during the storm, viewers appeared to be baffled due to a lack of sightings of the animals on screen.

They said: "Cow stampede? You mean they have farm animals in Emmerdale?"

It seems that fans have been waiting for the cows to arrive during the storm scenes, and that they want more appearances from animals in the future, with one saying: "Manifesting the cows actually entering the village."

Another added: "I just want my flying cow like in the film Twister"

The village survives the damage

Despite Emmerdale bosses teasing that "the village will never be the same again," it seems that they may have meant that the residents' lives will never be the same again – not the village itself.

Viewers watching the storm have noticed that despite the weather disaster wreaking havoc on the resident's lives, the village itself appears to have come out unscathed.

In the past, storms and disasters have caused major damage to landmarks including The Woolpack, but on its 50th anniversary, could the village survive the storm this time?

One said: "If that wind was strong enough to lift a car and a caravan there'd not be a roof left in that village."

A second added: "It's hard to believe one storm is going to extinguish an entire village," while a third pointed out: "So the whole village knew there's a storm coming yet nobody secures anything down, locks anything away."

A fourth commented: "Oh dear! A fallen tree! Life will truly never be the same again," while a fifth agreed: "They always say 'life will never be the same again' when they have their annual disasters!"

However, other viewers are not so sure, and they do think that with further episodes to go this week, the village could potentially sustain some permanent damage.

"First the bus shelter now the famous telephone box. Will the village look the same by next week?" asked one fan.

Another agreed: "Never been so gripped by a soap but I'm so anxious for this village."

One viewer also commented: "The big tree's gone. That's the sign it's time to evacuate the village forever. With as many tragedies and deaths that #Emmerdale has, I'm not surprised the Woolpack sign ends up hanging off, like it's at half mast."

Residents still in peril

While the village may still be standing, the village has changed forever following the deaths of Harriet and Liv earlier this week.

However, with so many deaths during the storm, fans think that there still could be more to come as the fall-out from the storm continues in the weeks ahead.

"It's like final destination. Death cannot be avoided, especially when a caravan starts wondering down the village," said one fan.

"At this point, I feel like every character in the village is gonna be dead by the end of next week," agreed a second.

Meanwhile, some viewers even compared the future of Emmerdale to a horror film, with a third saying: "Village of the f*****g damned."

One fan even went as far as to suggest that the number of deaths could lead to a potentially terrifying twist – or spooky spin-off – adding: "A zombie apocalypse is the only disaster left for the little Northern village of the damned."

The storm is the least of Emmerdale's worries

There has been a storm causing damage to both the village and the resident's lives, but fans think that it may have been the least of their worries if a certain serial killer returns.

Fans have been speculating for months that the 50th anniversary could see the return of Meena Jutla, with some saying she could escape from prison to take revenge during the storm.

"Meena escapes from prison and takes out the rest of the village," said one fan.

"She has to escape and come back to cause chaos in the village again one day," added a second.

A third added: "Is her escape the plan for #Emmerdale50?" with a fourth saying: "Please don't say she will pop up in during the anniversary week by maybe escaping prison."

Another fan also said: "Like every time you think it is finally over… surprise! Her story continues for another few months."
