Hayden Panettiere reveals her liver 'gave out' in secret opioid addiction & admits she 'didn't want to see' her daughter | The Sun

HAYDEN Panettiere has revealed in a new interview that her liver "gave out" due to a secret opioid addiction she dealt with for years.

The actress admitted that she didn't want to see her daughter during her struggles.

Hayden opened up about her addictions in the latest edition of PEOPLE.

She told the publication that she was just 15 when someone on her team would give her "happy pills" before walking the red carpet, which would make her upbeat during interviews.

This led to an addiction to opioids and alcohol.

"I had no idea that this was not an appropriate thing, or what door that would open for me when it came to my addiction," the actress told the publication.

Hayden couldn't live with the drugs and alcohol off-set and eventually, her life revolved around them.

"I was on top of the world and I ruined it," she said.

Her addiction got so bad that she would "have the shakes when she woke up" which would only be cured by sipping some alcohol.

The actress revealed that she had to go to the hospital for treatment and that her liver "gave out" on her.

SCARY DIAGNOSIS

Her drinking problem got worse and eventually, she had to go to the hospital.

There, she was diagnosed with jaundice, which is a "condition in which the skin, whites of the eyes, and mucous membranes turn yellow because of a high level of bilirubin, a yellow-orange bile pigment."

Doctors told Hayden that her liver was going to go out if she didn't get help.

"I was no longer a 20-year-old who could just bounce right back," she said.

She eventually entered rehab for eight months and told PEOPLE that it finally got her "over the hump."

POST-PARTUM DEPRESSION

To add to her addictions, Hayden suffered from post-partum depression after giving birth to her daughter, Kaya, in 2015.

She shares Kaya with her ex, Wladimir Klitschko.

"I'd think I hit rock bottom, but then there's that trap door that opens," Hayden admitted.

Her real-life pregnancy was written into her role in Nashville, but it soon became clear that her character's demons were something she was facing as well.

"Those were really tough years. I could relate to a lot of those storylines like alcoholism and postpartum depression. They hit close to home," she said.

"I never had the feeling that I wanted to harm my child, but I didn't want to spend any time with her," said Hayden about her PPD.

"There was just this gray color in my life."

Even though the actress sought treatment for her depression, she still struggled and depended on alcohol to get her through most days.

She eventually sought treatment for her depression.

FAMILY TROUBLE

Drugs and alcohol can be hard to deal with in a relationship.

She met Wladimir in 2009 at a book launch party and they hit it off and began dating soon after.

They had split in 2011 due to long-distance but got back together in 2013.

Eventually, Wladimir proposed in 2014 and they welcomed their first child together in 2015.

Her relationship hit rock bottom when she would sneak away to drink because she couldn't deal with it all.

"He didn't want to be around me," she admitted.

By 2018, the couple had split and Hayden made the hard decision of sending Kaya to go live with Wladimir in Ukraine.

"It was the hardest thing I ever had to do. But I wanted to be a good mom to her — and sometimes that means letting them go," she said.

After letting her daughter have a better life, Hayden then found out about her liver.

SEEKING TREATMENT

After entering rehab, Hayden "finally found the peace she yearned for so long."

"It's an everyday choice, and I'm checking in with myself all the time. But I'm just so grateful to be part of this world again, and I will never take it for granted again," she told PEOPLE.

After she had to give her daughter to her ex, she was determined to put a lot of work into herself.

She "underwent both trauma therapy and inpatient treatment within the last year" and is returning to the big screen in the next Scream film.

Hayden hasn't had much luck in relationships as she was in an abusive relationship with Brian Hickerson after Wladimir.

They broke up in 2020 after he was arrested for corporal injury on a spouse/cohabitant, assault, and intimidating a witness, but they eventually reunited.
