Oprah Winfrey didn’t set out to do ‘bombshell’ interview with Meghan and Harry

Oprah Winfrey has confessed she was surprised when her interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was branded a “bombshell” by the media.

On Monday (September 12), the 68-year-old talk show host joined Gayle King on CBS where she was quizzed about her now unforgettable chat with the royal couple last year.

As she opened up about the highly televised interview, the American broadcaster admitted that she was just as surprised by the insight the pair gave into the Royal Family as everyone else.

She told the TV host: “I was as surprised by the bombshell as everybody else.

“I was doing an interview to offer them a platform to tell their story about why they left, and that was my number one intention was just clarity on ‘Why did you leave?’

“And so some of the things that were revealed in that interview came as a surprise to me and those surprises are now referred to as a ‘bombshell’.”

Oprah went on to reveal that she didn’t intent to produce such an explosive interview with the royals, but simply give the pair a platform to explain their side of the story following their public separation from the monarchy.

She continued: “But I didn’t set out to do a ‘bombshell’ interview. I set out to do an interview, have a conversation that would allow them to tell their story.”

Gaye then interjected with: “And now people, ‘reconciliation, reconciliation, we hope the brothers reconcile’, what do you say?”

It was at this point that the beloved host explained that she never wanted to get involved in her guests about their family life.

Oprah fired back with: “I do not get into people’s family matters. Everybody who has experienced some challenges in their families with in-laws or brothers or sisters know how difficult some of those situations can be and I'm sure that you know for the Royal Family, it’s no different.

“And nobody comes to talk to me about their family business so I try and stay out of people’s family business!”

During the 2021 tell-all interview with Oprah, Harry and Meghan explained their decision to split from the Royal Family.

It was during this interview that Meghan revealed how there had been “concerns” over the colour of their son Archie’s skin tone and said Prince Charles, now King Charles, had stopped taking Harry’s phone calls.

The mum-of-two went on to admit that she felt suicidal during her first pregnancy but was unable to get the help, and even divulged that the pair had secretly got married before their royal wedding.
