Outlander’s William star teases ‘high stakes big scene’ with Jamie Fraser

William Ransom (played by Charles Vandervaart) believes he is the son of Geneva Dunsany (Hannah James) and Ludovic Ransom, however, he is actually the illegitimate child of Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).

There are only a handful of characters in Outlander who know the truth and actor Charles has teased the fall out when William learns about his link to Jamie.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Charles explained: “I don’t think he will love it when he finds out.

“That’s the strange thing because William’s entire identity is based off of his position in English hierarchy of being a Lord and being raised by Lord John Grey.

“Everything about his behaviours and the things that he has back in England and in the military are all based on his position and his birthright some would say.

“It turns out parentage isn’t actually the parentage that he thought he had.”

Charles went on to add: “I do think maybe he has a bit of an inkling.

“The story of both his parents dying on the day he was born, the fact his father was much much older – or his so-called father was much older than his mother.

“I think there is some identity confusion definitely throughout this season and it is something he surpasses because there is no good answer for him that’s available to him.

“But no, I don’t think he’s going to be thrilled when he finds out about Jamie. We’ll see what happens but maybe he will come around one day.”

The newcomer went on to tease a big scene with Jamie and Lord John Grey (David Berry): “There are scenes where all three of us are in one big scene and it’s way later in the season and the relationships have changed drastically at that point and there’s a lot of high stakes and emotions there.”

Fans recently saw William suffer a gruesome injury when he fell from his horse in Dismal Swamp and ended up with a stick impaled in his arm.

Sharing details of how it was filmed, Charles explained: “It was really cool doing it and I had a weird sensation that I remember from that day.

“They put a prosthetic arm on, I remember I had to go and have a cast for my arm and sit and let this mould dry for a few hours and then they put this fake arm over the top of my arm, this sleeve.

“It had the wound on it and I had this weird psychosomatic feeling where I could feel like a weird pain in my arm as it looked so realistic. I think my brain thought I had an injury.

“It as so realistic in real life and really gruesome to watch that pus come out of my own arm. It was like an outer body experience. I’m glad he got to keep his arm!”
