Paddy in Emmerdale says tragic goodbye to loved ones amid suicide fears

Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) returns to Emmerdale in upcoming episodes, but it’s clear he’s still struggling massively with his mental health.

The discovery of wife Chas (Lucy Pargeter)’s affair last year was a huge blow to Paddy and the rage and despair he felt over that took its toll as he felt his future with her had been ripped apart.

The knowledge that Chas had been planning to take his daughter Eve (Bella James) away to live with her and her lover Al Chapman (Michael Wildman) was an unforgivable action as far as Paddy was concerned but when Chas was gradually welcomed back into the Dingle family fold he felt himself becoming increasingly isolated.

Reaching out to old friend and ex-wife Mandy (Lisa Riley) seemed like a positive step, but after too much to drink the pair ended up sleeping together and following this Paddy vanished.

He finally returns to the village in emotional upcoming scenes as he reunites with Eve, Marlon (Mark Charnock), Bear (Joshua Richards) and others. But when Paddy is alone we see the real strain the situation is taking on him and how, despite having so many of his friends and family around him he still feels completely alone.

Show producer Jane Hudson told us, ‘Paddy is usually very happy-go-lucky in life, always joking and having a laugh, but what we see is that recent events have really taken their toll.

‘Despite him being popular and having lots of friends and family around him, Paddy starts to feel increasingly lonely, isolated and overwhelmed by his feelings and this leads to him having some very dark thoughts.’

He goes about his day making amends with family and friends, but what none of them realise is he’s actually saying goodbye as he plans to end his own life.

As the story unfolds, Jane said, ‘I think it’s really important that we play this story to its fullest and we show that journey, and it’s not an easy journey. You need support from your friends, you need trust in yourself and in others, and it takes time.

‘We’ll see Paddy go on that journey to find himself again.’

Samaritans and men’s suicide prevention charity Andy’s Man Club have worked alongside Emmerdale in this storyline. ‘Their incredible support and insight has helped us to shape Paddy’s journey into a true reflection of what thousands of men sadly go through every year,’ Jane said.
