Strictly’s Amy Dowden vows to return to ballroom after cancer diagnosis

Strictly’s Amy Dowden diagnosed with breast cancer

Strictly Come Dancing star Amy Dowden was diagnosed with aggressive grade three breast cancer last month and has had two tumours removed.

Following the surgery she has vowed to return to the much-loved BBC show which will be back on air in September.

As she waits to hear what stage her cancer is at now and whether she needs radiotherapy or chemotherapy, she told the Daily Mirror: “If I only have radiotherapy I’ll be back on Strictly this season.”

The professional dancer said “there’ll be nothing to stop me” once her radiotherapy is complete.

She added Strictly is “leaving the door open” and there’s “no pressure” to recover in time for the new series.

Amy added: “I’m visualising myself on that Strictly dance floor.

“Just being back in the ballroom with the live audience, the adrenalin and the atmosphere. And the support from the whole Strictly family.

“We can choreograph around me doing things with lifting, putting pressure on my arm. You can adapt.”

Not only is Amy being supported by Strictly Come Dancing but former celebrity partners including JJ Chalmers.

“He’s been a great support, he says, ‘Cancer has messed with the wrong person.’”

Amy explained even if she can’t be back on the dance floor and she has to have chemotherapy she will still be involved in the show.

“If I have to have chemotherapy, I’ll be present in some way, even if I’m in a wig,” she shared.

“I know amazing hair people with Strictly. Whether it’s on It Takes Two, or being up in Claudia’s area waiting for the scores, I’ll be there.”

It comes after Amy spoke about the “terrifying” wait for results after having her tumours removed.

She told the Mirror: “The cancer is in the lab now, which is the most important thing, the hardest time was waiting for surgery, thinking ‘I have cancer inside me.’

“You’re thinking ‘It’s grade three, what if it’s spreading, what if it spreads tonight?’

“The feeling of it made me feel disgusted, disgusting. That’s the time I was randomly crying, emotional.”

Strictly Come Dancing is expected to return to BBC One later this year.
