Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter paid tribute to his younger brother Aaron on Sunday following the news that Aaron was found dead in a bathtub at his California home a day earlier at the age of 34

He wrote that his heart was broken despite the brothers complicated relationship, adding that his love for Aaron never faded

Aaron and Nick had a tumultuous relationship in the years before the singer’s death, but Nick put that aside for a heartfelt tribute on Sunday about the tragic loss of his brother.

‘My heart has been broken today,’ Nick wrote. ‘Even though my brother and I have had a complicated relationship, my love for him has never ever faded. I have always held onto the hope, that he would somehow, someday want to walk a healthy path and eventually find the help that he so desperately needed.’

He continued: ‘Sometimes we want to blame someone or something for a loss. But the truth is that addiction and mental illness is the real villain here.’

‘I will miss my brother more than anyone will ever know. I love you Chizz., now you get a chance to finally have some peace you could never find here on earth….God,Please take care of my baby brother.’

In 2019, Nick and Angel filed a restraining order against Aaron, with Nick saying in a statement that Aaron allegedly harbored ‘intentions of killing my wife and unborn child.’

‘After careful consideration, my sister Angel and I regret that we were required to seek a restraining order against our brother Aaron today,’ Nick wrote at the time. ‘We were left with no choice, but to take every measure possible to protect ourselves and our family.’

He added that he loved Aaron and hope he would get ‘the proper treatment he needs before any harm comes to himself or anyone else.’

Aaron responded to the restraining order at the time by tweeting: ‘So my brother just got a restraining order against me. And I was just served lol.’

‘Take care. @NickCarter we’re done for life,’ he continued. ‘I haven’t seen him in four years. And I don’t intend to … I am astounded at the accusations being made against me, and I do not wish harm to anyone, especially my family.’

The family also had another sister, Leslie, who passed away in 2012 at the age of 25 from a drug overdose.

Law enforcement said they received a 911 call at 11am on Saturday, saying ‘a male had drowned in the tub.’ They were contacted by a house sitter, who had found his body, the sheriff’s department told DailyMail.com.

Witnesses described a ‘chaotic’ scene at the singer’s house, with police cars, news vans, and people crowding in the streets to see what happened.

Carter’s neighbor Tony Cheval, a local photojournalist, told The U.S. Sun that his wife encountered the house sitter screaming at Carter’s door.

He explained that he heard on his police scanner that he uses for work a call come in for an unresponsive male in the bathtub at a house in their neighborhood.

Cheval’s wife, who is a nurse, rushed over to Carter’s home with her AED [automated external defibrillator] and banged on the door, he said.

‘A woman answered the door and was screaming ‘he’s dead, he’s dead’ but wouldn’t let us in because she’d already called the cops,’ he said.

The neighbors later spoke to Carter’s devastated fiancée, Melanie Martin, who told them that the woman was the house sitter and was kept for questioning while Martin herself ‘waited for hours’ for information from police.

‘I spoke to Melanie afterward and she said it was his maid, and questioned why she wouldn’t let us in.

‘Melanie drove up from Orange County, she was distraught.’

Another witness told The U.S. Sun that Carter’s house sitter looked ‘shaken’ and spoke to police inside before being escorted out with belongings in bags.

The witness added: ‘The house-sitter was the only person behind the police tape for a long while.’

‘Melanie had to wait hours before police would even tell her anything, and she was desperate to see their many pet dogs still in the house.’

Homicide detectives were dispatched to the scene, but there is no information or evidence of foul play at this time. Emergency services were spotted outside the home, which has been cordoned off with police tape.

A coroner was seen removing Carter’s body from the home on Saturday afternoon.

Carter, who opened for the Backstreet Boys on a 1997 tour, shot to fame in the 90s releasing four studio albums, starting with his self-titled debut album in 1997 when he was only nine years old.

In the embattled rapper’s last performance before his untimely death, he can be heard singing that ‘he’ll be gone but it’s not for long’.

The video was posted to Instagram just a day before the announcement of his death.

A close friend of Carter’s told The U.S. Sun that they believe he did not commit suicide, said he had been planning studio sessions with artists the following week for an album.

Carter had also told the friend that he was ‘excited’ to showcase new music and work with artists who were traveling to Los Angeles specifically for a duet.

‘Any suggestion he was suicidal last night when he was in contact with his friends and team is wrong,’ the friend said. ‘Hearing the news this morning was absolutely devastating.’

The friend added that Carter had a good heart, was a talented artist and wanted to show the world that he was a ‘great father and continue strongly with his music career.’

He also added: ‘Aaron was always adamant he took medication and pills that were prescribed by doctors.

‘He would swear blind he did not take narcotics like cocaine.’

The 34-year-old notably battled addiction for many years, facing legal troubles and entering rehabilitation while continuing with his music career, according to E!.

In 2019, he revealed on ‘The Doctors’ that he was diagnosed with ‘multiple personality disorder, schizophrenia, acute anxiety and manic depression,’ according to CNN.

The troubled celebrity is survived by his son Prince.

He was born in Tampa Bay, Florida in 1989. Along with brother Nick, he had a twin sister, Angel and two other sisters, BJ and Leslie, releasing his first album at the age of just nine

Since January 2020 Carter had an on again, off again relationship with one-time fiancée Martin, who gave birth to Prince in November 2021. He confirmed in an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com in August that the two were no longer in a relationship and had ended their romance for good.

However, Martin was visibly upset outside Carter’s house on Saturday, and released a statement calling him her ‘fiance.’

‘My fiancé Aaron Carter has passed away. I love Aaron with all my heart and it’s going to be a journey to raise a son without a father. Please respect the privacy of my family as we come to terms with the loss of someone we love greatly. We are still in the process of accepting this unfortunate reality. Your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated.’

Earlier this year, Carter filed for custody of their son and a petition for protection against Martin at the Antelope Valley Courthouse in Los Angeles County.

In a court filing he accused his ex of ’emotional distress, anguish, shoving, & scratching’, and claimed she used the threat of suicide to abuse him ’emotionally’.

The following month, Martin requested a restraining order against Carter claiming he punched her and broke three of her ribs. Martin included medical records that indicated at least one of her ribs was broken.

But just a few days later she posted on social media retracting her claims.

‘I’ve had a bad time with post pardom [postpartum] depression. Aaron never hit me I was angry because I mad[e] a mistake a bad one. And we were arguing A LOT because he was trying to break up with me for what I did,’ she wrote.

In May the pair reportedly started therapy. Carter denied any abuse and claimed the pair were moving towards peace.

‘We are in a very different place than we were then. We were and still are new parents dealing with the world while also trying to navigate our own relationship,’ he said at the time. ‘One of the many downsides of fame is having to deal with your personal problems publicly. Right now both of our priorities are putting our issues to the side and trying to build a new and better foundation for our child.’

Melanie Martin, who said she was Carter’s fiancée, released a statement on Saturday after Carter had passed away

Tributes began pouring in for the rapper after news of his death.

Hilary Duff, who famously dated Carter in the early 2000s, paid tribute to her ex-boyfriend in a touching Instagram post Saturday evening following the shocking announcement of the singer and actor’s death.

‘For Aaron – I’m deeply sorry that life was so hard for you and that you had to struggle in front of the whole world. You had a charm that was absolutely effervescent… boy did my teenage self love you dearly. Sending love to your family at this time. Rest easy.’

Carter and Duff dated on and off between 2001 and 2003, when they were barely teenagers. Carter even appeared in an episode of Duff’s famous Disney Channel sitcom, Lizzie McGuire.

They were involved in a tumultuous romance, with Aaron also alleged to be dating Lindsay Lohan at the same time. That led to a reported feud between the two actresses. In 2003, the young couple broke up for good over rumors that Aaron cheated on Duff.

Several other celebrities joined Duff in tribute to the late singer.

New Kids on the Block released a statement on their Instagram to honor the singer.

The band wrote, ‘We are shocked and saddened about the sudden passing of Aaron Carter. Sending prayers to the Carter family. Rest in peace, Aaron.’

Courtney Stodden also shared a tribute to Aaron on her Instagram writing, ‘He called me, confided but I stepped away due to threats by surrounding people. I hoped he’d heal but now he’s at peace … I’m so gutted #ripaaroncarter #rip #tooyoung.’

Last week, Carter was pulled over on suspicion of DUI on Tuesday, after Martin ‘called the police’ – with the embattled singer later cleared of any wrongdoing.

TMZ reported that the ‘I Want Candy’ hitmaker was driving an RV in Antelope Valley around 10:45 a.m. when police got a call about a driver possibly driving under the influence and weaving through traffic.

Officers conducted field sobriety tests on the star and found him to be not under the influence. In a bizarre turn, he later locked his keys inside the RV with photos showing the singer getting into the vehicle via the roof hatch to retrieve them.

Carter has since spoken out against being portrayed as a washed-up drug addict despite turning his life around for the better and marking five years sober.

In August, the former teen heartthrob revealed his fury about his problematic public image in an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com, saying he believed his recovery has been ignored and that he should no longer be viewed as a ‘train wreck’.

‘I realized that I was killing myself and everything was being destroyed around me from it,’ Carter told DailyMail.com.

‘I was lying to the world and myself. Everybody deserves a second chance. I have not committed any crazy crimes.

‘I am not how some people try to paint me. If somebody wants to call me a train wreck, well I’ve been a train that’s been wrecked multiple times and derailed by many different things.

‘But I rebuild, get on the tracks and keep going.’

He added that knowing there are ‘so many reasons to be here, to live,’ keeps him motivated in fighting his addiction.

Carter said he got hooked on ‘huffing’ and ‘dusting,’ a form of inhalant abuse involving canned aerosol chemicals, which the American Addiction Centers (AAC) says causes ‘an immediate rush of euphoria as well as possible hallucinations and delusions.’

Carter admitted his use was so severe he suffered seizures.

AAC experts warn excessive huffing can lead to ‘sudden sniffing death’ by causing fatal heart failure – even the first time it is tried.

In 2019 Carter appeared on the TV series The Doctors where a urine test came back positive for marijuana, ‘extended opiates’ and benzodiazepine – which he was taking to treat his multiple personality disorder, schizophrenia, and acute anxiety.

In August, Carter insisted that he had no opiate issues, had quit smoking weed, and was not an excessive alcohol drinker.

The singer had previously revealed his sister Leslie, who died from an overdose in 2012, was the one who introduced him to huffing.

Despite his battles with substance abuse and legal troubles documented in the media over the years, Carter was adamant that he is ‘not a victim, but a soldier’, and admitted his resent for his public image as a troubled former star.

The singer also shared revelations about his complicated relationship with his family, including his older brother Nick.

Carter claimed their years of estrangement was caused by his siblings ‘infantilizing’ him.

‘One of the things I tell them is stop worrying about me. Worry about yourself.

‘If somebody, who is in recovery, makes the decision to relapse you cannot stop them.

‘I am closer to 40 than 20. Enough is enough.

‘My sister Angel is always: ‘I am so worried’. But are you? If you were worried you would show up to my house.

‘I told them ‘you cannot infantilize me. You cannot treat me like a little child and baby.’

‘There were times when my three sisters, when I turned 18 and got millions of dollars, were hanging out with me, because I had the money,’ he said. ‘Then when I go broke and lose it all, where are they?

‘That upsets me a lot.’

But Carter added at the time that he was ‘absolutely’ hopeful for a resolution.

‘It takes two to tango. I have reached out many times and they treat me the way that Michael Jackson’s brothers treated him. It’s sad.

‘It is like I’m appreciated more when I am failing than when I’m succeeding.

‘I am a father. I am a success story. And I am going to continue to be that whether anyone chooses to see it or not. If they don’t then I am going to shove it in your face, because I am a good person to look at as an inspiration on how to keep pushing on and never giving up.

‘I am never going to stop doing this.’

Carter credited his brother Nick (pictured at the Billboard Music Awards in 2000) for putting him through his first rehab stint

The singer grew up in the shadow of Carter’s world-conquering boy band but also tried to stake out his own claim in pop music, releasing his first record in 1997 at the age of just nine, on the same Jive Records label that led his brother to stardom

Carter first found fame as a teen pop star in early 2000s, with hits such as ‘I want Candy,’ and ‘Aaron’s Party’ (Seen in 1998)

In the interview, Carter complained that the public was not interested in his ‘success story’ or in giving him ‘a fair shake’, and questioned why singer Demi Lovato’s recovery from an overdose was celebrated, while his success in getting clean was ignored.

‘Of course if Demi Lovato accidentally overdoses on opiates, then the next day she is on the cover of Women’s Fitness,’ he said.

‘The media doesn’t want to treat me like that. They want to villainize me.

‘I am coming up on five years being clean and the media doesn’t pay as much attention to it as they should, because I am the living testament to ‘you can do it’.

‘There is a lot of things I have to change,’ he added.

However, Carter admitted that his struggle with trying to rehabilitate his image only taught him how to block out the hate and criticism. Carter also thanked his brother for getting him into his first rehab stint.

‘The first person who brought me to rehab [at] the Betty Ford Center and paid for it was Nick,’ he said. ‘And I love you for that Nick. It took me a while to get right but I have got it figured out.’

Carter, who sold over 70 million albums, said his daily battle to stay clean was fueled by a desire to be the best father to his infant son Prince, who was born last year.

‘My son is going to see everything I do and I want him to be proud of his father. I want the world to be proud of me how I turned my life around, accept my flaws and show humility,’ he said.

‘I am just a person, I am not anything super special.

‘I am a great dad and a great lover. Treat me with kindness.’

Carter opened for the Backstreet Boys tour in 1997 — the same year his gold-selling debut album was released.

He reached triple-platinum status with his sophomore album, 2000′s ‘Aaron’s Party (Come Get It),’ which produced hit singles including the title song and ‘I Want Candy.’ His videos received regular airplay on Disney and Nickelodeon.

The singer earned acting credits through his appearance on television shows including ‘Lizzie McGuire.’ He starred alongside his siblings on the E! unscripted series ‘House of Carters’ in 2006.

Carter made his Broadway debut in 2001 as JoJo in the musical ‘Seussical.’ In 2009, he appeared on the ABC competition show ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ finishing in fifth place with partner Karina Smirnoff. He was featured on the Food Network cooking show ‘Rachel vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off’ in 2012.

In 2017, Carter opened up about his substance abuse on an episode of ‘The Doctors.’ He was in rehab that same year after he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and marijuana charges. He checked himself in for treatment on a few occasions in an effort to regain custody of his son Prince.

Carter’s fifth and final studio album, ‘LOVE,’ was released in 2018.
