Father and son,10, were killed in Turkish moped accident as they carried out ‘final errand’ before flying home to Ireland

  •  Eoin Fitzpatrick, 36 and son Dylan both died after a bus crashed into them
  •  Accident happened just before they were due to fly back from Turkey

An Irishman and his ten-year-old son who died in a moped accident in Turkey were ‘carrying out a final errand’ before coming back to Ireland when they were knocked down and killed.

Eoin Fitzpatrick, 36, and his son Dylan died after a bus crashed into them in the tourist area of Alanya on Monday afternoon.

Eoin’s other son, a 15-year-old boy, remains in Turkey with his father’s partner and her children.

The mother of the boys is currently on her way to Turkey to help with the repatriation of her child and former partner’s bodies. According to Turkish media, the father and son’s moped collided with a bus on the D-400 highway in the Kargicak District which was travelling from Alanya to Mersin.

Tributes have been paid to the father and son by those who knew them.

Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley, who is a neighbour of Eoin’s in Portlaoise, Co. Laois, said he was ‘devastated’ to hear the news of the sudden deaths.

Speaking to the Irish Daily Mail, Mr Stanley said: ‘Obviously there’s shock and devastation at the loss of these two people. [Dylan] would have been very popular in the neighbourhood… (people) would have seen him mixing with the kids here.

‘My heartfelt sympathies go to the mother of the boy and also to the parents of the deceased man and the grandparents on both sides.

‘In the days and weeks ahead, the community in Portlaoise will rally around both families and hopefully be able to give them some support and comfort.’

Mr Stanley also revealed they were due to fly home from their holiday on the day of tragedy.

‘It looks like they were carrying out a final errand before making their way to the airport when the crash happened.

‘My heartfelt sympathies go to their mam and to the grand-parents on both sides.

‘You have grandparents on one side who have lost a son and a grandson. I spoke with them this morning and they are devastated. The crash was a last-minute thing. They were using a moped and then this happened,’ he said.

This is the latest tragedy to happen to Irish people while holidaying abroad this summer. Earlier this month, former St Michael’s College students Andrew O’Donnell, 18, and Max Wall, 18, who were on holiday on the island Greek of Ios, died while on a post-Leaving Cert holiday.

Andrew died after apparently falling while making his way home to his holiday accommodation after a night out. According to his school principal, Andrew suffered an accident while taking a shortcut after making the ‘sensible’ decision to go home early.

The popular teenager’s friend and schoolmate Max, who had a history of heart problems, died later that day after collapsing at the port while waiting for a ferry to leave the island.

At the end of June, tributes were paid to a young Irish student who was found dead in a swimming pool in Greece.

It is understood the Limerick-based student was found unresponsive in the pool by a friend and, despite efforts at resuscitation, he was pronounced dead. He is a past pupil of Coláiste Mhuire in Johnstown and was a student at the Technological University of Shannon in Limerick city.

Rory Deegan, 22, from Culohill in Co. Laois was found unresponsive in a swimming pool on the Greek island of Zakynthos when the tragedy occurred.

In another incident earlier this month, Irish mother Kirsty Ward was strangled to death in the Spanish tourist town of Salou.

The mother-of-two was found dead at the Hotel Magnolia in the Costa Dorada resort on the evening of Sunday, July 2. A man has denied murdering a 36-year-old Irish woman in a Spanish hotel in a video filmed in a prison cell.

Spanish police confirmed they arrested a 30-year-old man on the night of Ms Ward’s death after rushing to a hotel in the Costa Dorada resort of Salou, 110km south of Barcelona. When they arrived they reportedly found Ms Ward lying lifeless in a corridor.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it was aware of the incident.
