A YouTuber has been slammed for pulling a stunt in which he taunts what appears to be a homeless man in LA by eating a burger in front of him.

In the video, small-time content creator Trevon Sellars asked a man in a parking lot if he wanted a meal before buying one at Wendy’s, pretending to offer it to him and then eating it in front of him.

The video, which was first posted last moth, has now gone viral and viewers have slammed Sellars for being ‘heartless’, ‘cruel’ and ‘sick’.

In a post on Monday responding to the outrage, Sellers claimed the man who appeared in the video was a ‘friend’ and that the entire video was scripted. 

But viewers were not satisfied with that explanation, one person asked: ‘What was the purpose of this video even if it was “staged”?’

‘No matter how you justify this, unless that guy says otherwise you look guilty,’ wrote another.

Sellars has accrued a small following of around 30,000 people in the last year posting videos of him harassing seemingly homeless people and members of public. 

In updated caption to the original video, Sellars wrote on Monday: ‘I asked him before hand if we could make this video and he agreed to be in it. I gave him some money and food before we even started recording.’

The video begins with Sellars in a seemingly sympathetic tone telling viewers about the scale of homelessness in LA.

‘Los Angeles, California, has the third biggest homeless population in the United States and today it’s my job to make sure there’s one less hungry person on the streets,’ Sellars said.

He then approached a man sitting in a parking lot and asked for his name and whether he was hungry.

When the man told him his name and confirmed that he was hungry, Sellars suggested he would buy him a meal from a nearby Wendy’s.

After returning with the food, he started unwrapping it and said: ‘I was homeless myself and want to make sure you get on the right path. You’re always able to get back on your feet, I want you to enjoy this.’

In other videos and photos on his Instagram, Sellars dresses up as a homeless person and performs stunts in public

Sellars then ate the food proudly and left, telling the man, ‘This is really good. Alright, take care, have a nice day.’

In the latter part of the original video, which did not go viral, Sellars returned to the same spot with another meal but by that point the man had left.

Instead, he took the meal to another group of men beside tents on the side of the road and offered them the meal. The first person said, ‘nah, we don’t want none of that s**t,’ but another man accepted the food. 

DailyMail.com wrote to Sellars for more information regarding the context of the video but did not get a reply.

On Twitter one user pointed out that it is common among certain types of online personalities to use homeless people for filming prank videos and other such content.

‘Y’all not tired of using homeless people for pranks/content?’ they wrote. 

In another post addressing the controversy around the video Sellars said: ‘I have the entire world mad at me over an edited video’ and posted the definition of the term rage bait.
