Tanning salon owner 'disgusted' after customer urinates on a sunbed

Tanning salon owner left ‘disgusted’ after customer urinates on a sunbed during six-minute session

  • Owner of The Tanning Room said customers urinating on sunbeds is ‘common’
  • Odelle Burney said that this comes at a cost to the salon – having to deep clean

A tanning salon owner was left ‘truly disgusted’ after discovering one customer had urinated on a sunbed during just a six-minute session.

The Tanning Room in Lees, Oldham was forced to close-off and deep clean one of its rooms on Thursday when a sunbed was found drenched in urine.

This was the fifth time an incident like this had occurred in ten years, Odelle Burney claimed, adding that it seemed to be ‘common’ among sunbed shops.

Following the incident, she posted on the salon’s Facebook account: ‘Just to let you know we know who you are the person who has just weed on bed 3 !!!

‘We have checked the CCTV and you are truly disgusted ! Anyone else found doing this in any of our sunbeds will be instantly banned from the shop. Thank you.’

Odelle explained that the urine was first discovered after the customer ‘scuffled nicely out of the shop’ and a staff member went to use the sunbed when finishing work.

She told Manchester Evening News: ‘She put her tokens in, opened the bed’s door and then ended up slipping on the mat because it was so wet. Then she started to notice the smell and lifted the mat up to discover what had happened.

‘To wee on a sunbed with the electricity and high voltage is pretty crazy to me – why do people think it’s acceptable to do that?

‘We have a staff toilet and we’ll let customers use it for medical reasons or if there’s an emergency, but we’re also opposite a library that has a public toilet. It’s not like there weren’t any options.’

Odelle was not at work on Thursday, but came into the salon to help tidy up and give the sunbed cubicle a deep clean.

‘We had to throw away all the internal and external mats and give it a deep clean and sanitise everything,’ she explained.

‘We’ve had to order new mats and had to shut the room for at least half an hour, so we lost out on money having to close that.

‘I could do without this, to be honest with you. It’s one extra thing we’ve have to deal with.’

Urinating incidents have happened five times since Odelle has owned The Tanning Room

The customer has since been identified, thanks to CCTV footage, and banned from returning to The Tanning Room.

‘We do have CCTV but we do not have cameras inside the cubicles at all,’ she said. ‘We just monitor the entrances and everyone coming in and out.

‘They’re not a regular customer. Obviously, if she comes back in again, I’m going to have to pull her to one side and bar her. I kind of hope she doesn’t come back as it avoids me the embarrassment of having to do that.’

She added: ‘It’s crazy, I don’t know what it is but it appears to be quite a common thing in sunbed shops.

‘Maybe it’s just from people coming in from the cold and then the heat hits them and they can’t control their bladder, but it’s definitely not the first time it’s happened – we’ve had about five incidents in ten years.’

After posting about the incident on social media, comments flooded in from other customers.

One said: ‘Wow I’m sure if they asked to use the toilet wouldn’t be a problem.’

Another simply replied: ‘Seriously……. nahhhhhh.’

The Tanning Room posted a follow-up comment, adding: ‘So just to let the lady know we know who you are and if you do have the cheek to come in our salon again we will politely pull you to one side and let you know you are barred! Thank you.’
