Kate Garraway reveals husband Derek has been rushed to hospital following MBE

Kate Garraway has revealed her husband Derek Draper has been rushed to hospital following her "extraordinary" recognition at Windsor Castle last week, where she was awarded an MBE.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, 56, was officially handed the honour by the Prince of Wales, 41, during a ceremony at on Wednesday (28 June) in recognition of her services to broadcasting, journalism and charity. Her proud husband Derek, 55, attended the ceremony to support his wife in a rare public appearance, where he was visibly moved by the occasion.

Derek’s life dramatically changed after contracting Covid-19 in 2020. He spent 13 months in hospital fighting for his life and was left needing round-the-clock care. Kate has continually issued updates regarding his condition, offering fans another insight on Sunday (2 July).

Sharing a few images from the castle, the popular presenter penned: "Well what a week, that started with Derek in hospital and ended with Derek in hospital, but with this extraordinary day in the middle. I am so incredibly moved and humbled by the whole experience.

"So many of you have sent so many lovely messages, including the lady who stopped her car a few minutes ago outside our house to say “I know what you’re going through, and I know how much that moment meant and I am a nurse.” it was so wonderful to see Derek’s determination to be there, so kind of the Prince of Wales, to make it special for him & to recognise the work of Jake our incredible carer, who represents all those who make Derek’s daily life possible, and of course my long-suffering, Mum and Dad!"

Kate went on to say it was "so humbling to meet all the others" there to receive their honours, who she branded "much more deserving than myself". She added: "The Prince of Wales managed to make every single one of them feel as special as they are."

Issuing a further update on her husband, the star continued: "Tomorrow Derek is back in hospital and of course the daily struggles go on – but the fact that he was able to be part of Wednesday is to be treasured & can’t thank everyone in the @NHS and all around him who love him for making it possible. I have so many thanks to give but I must make sure I thank @lisaredmanltd for the loan of my “fit for a king dress” & @missbsmillinery for its matching hat!! Love to you all and happy Sunday."

The GMB veteran's post was flooded with well wishes from fellow television stars and fans alike. Myleene Klass said: "Love you x", while Dr Amir Khan said: "Wonderful news, so incredibly well deserved". Presenter Anna Williamson said: "No one…NO ONE deserves this more Kate."

A fan commented: "It gave us joy to see this precious moment captured Kate", while another said: "You looked beautiful Kate and I have nothing but admiration for the strong Woman you are and the strength of Derek and ur family xx I know from my own experience you probably don’t feel that way yourself half the time but you are and this acknowledgment is a nice recognition xxx".

A third added: "Congratulations Kate, the whole nation loved this moment-a happy time. Sending love and strength to you all".
