The Princess of Wales appeared to become tearful in a rare emotional moment in public as she watched Ons Jabeur lose the women’s final of Wimbledon on Saturday.

Kate Middleton, 41, who is patron of the All England Club, watched Tunisia’s Jabeur take on the Czech Republic’s Markéta Vondrousova to win the Venus Rosewater Dish over the weekend. 

Throughout the match, the royal, who is a huge tennis fan, cheered, applauded and grinned as the unseeded Czech became the first-ever unseeded Grand Slam champion. 

However she also appeared to emphathise with Jabeur, who was openly weeping after losing the match.

Kate was moved by the action, and appeared to wipe tears from her eyes as she watched the conclusion of the match from the Royal Box.

After the match, Kate was seen consoling a highly emotional Jabeur, who was openly weeping after her lose 

Stakes were high for both players as left-handed Jabeur hoped to become the first African woman to win a Grand Slam, while Vondrousova made history as the first unseeded player to ever make the Wimbledon final in the Open era. 

A year ago, number six in the world Jabeur became the first North African woman, the first Arab woman and the first Muslim woman to make a Grand Slam final.

The Princess watched as a sobbing Vondrousova headed up to her player’s box to celebrate with her crying family, friends and coaches, before looking radiant as she congratulated her and handed her the trophy.

Wimbledon crowned a new winner as Vondrousova lifted the trophy and took home a handy £2.35 million.

The Czech has become the first ever Grand Slam player to win the title having entered the competition unseeded.

She later comforted Jabeur, offering her a huge and stopping to speak with her extensively. 

In her on court interview, the player was highly emotional, opening weeping as she spoke about the match. 

The player admitted her latest Wimbledon final defeat was the ‘most painful loss of her career’.

‘It will be tough to speak because this is very tough,’ an emotional Jabeur began.

‘I am going to look ugly in the photos so that’s not going to help. I think this is the most painful loss of my career.’

Jabeur broke down after the game as she promised to come back and ‘make it one day’ as she lost her third Grand Slam final

The Tunisian fell to a 6-4 6-4 defeat to Czech Republic’s unseeded Vondrousova during the final as Kate watched on 

Ons then congratulated Vondrousova for overcoming injury problems to become the first unseeded Wimbledon women’s single title winner.

‘I want to say congratulations to Marketa and her team for this amazing tournament. You’re an amazing player,’ Jabeur added.

‘I know you have had a lot of injuries, so I am very happy for you.

‘It’s going to be a tough day for me today. I’m not going to give up. I’m going to come back stronger and win a Grand Slam one day.

‘It was an amazing tournament for me. I wished I continued to the end. I want to thank my team for always believing in me.

‘We are going to make it one day, I promise you.

After the match, Kate offered Ons a hug before resting an empathetic hand onto her arm to comfort the player 


The Princess appeared deeply moved after the player’s lose at the Wimbledon final on Saturday 

Ons could not hold back her tears as she was applauded by the Princess and the crowd on Centre Court  

‘Thank you for coming, cheering for me, the energy is amazing from day one at Wimbledon. I appreciate your support. It’s been a tough journey but that’s tennis.

‘I promise I will come back one day and win this tournament.’

Later, Jabeur was asked by reporters what the Princess had said to her after the final.

She replied: ‘Same thing after last year: to encourage me to be strong, to come back and win a Grand Slam, win a Wimbledon.’

‘Obviously she was very nice. She didn’t know if she wants to give me a hug or not. I told her hugs are always welcome from me. 

‘That was a very nice moment and she’s always nice to me.’
