'Men are intimidated by me because I live in a fairytale castle'

A self-proclaimed princess who lives in a real-life medieval castle has said her unique home has made it harder to find a prince charming.

Ludovica Sannazzaro, 21, lives in an Italian castle complete with a moat that’s been in her family since its construction in 1163.

And she certainly leans into the aesthetic, dressing the part in long, flowing dresses that look fresh out of the pages of a storybook.

She also posts TikTok videos, recreating scenes from famous Disney movies, with her home acting as the perfect setting.

But Ludovica says her unique living situation has a negative effect on her love life as it can attract the wrong kind of men – and she doesn’t want to kiss any ‘frogs’.

‘I’ve had some people say, “Oh, I’m going to marry you so I’m gonna have all your money,’ the student explained.

‘I’m like, “I don’t think you understand how it works. Living in a castle doesn’t mean anything.”

‘Most people see just the fairytale part of me and my life, but of course that’s not my real life.

‘If I see that someone is more interested in my castle and the life they think they will have by being with me, I keep my distance.’

Castello Sannazzaro, once a fortress in Monferrato, Italy, was passed down to Ludovica’s dad. The family moved in when she was just four years old.

Knowing that she will one day inherit the incredible home, Ludovica is now trying to learn as much as she can about the amazing building in order to maintain it – and hopefully, one day, find a prince charming who shares her passion for its history.

But, she says that some men are intimidated by the castle.

Ludovica said: ‘I normally tend to not say I live in a castle at the beginning. I don’t want to scare potential dates off.

‘I don’t want them to feel less important, because I’ve had a lot of people thinking like that when they find out.

‘Most of the people I’ve previously dated were my friends first, so they knew about the castle for the longest time.’

According to Ludovica, living in the castle isn’t always a fairytale either.

In her videos, she reveals that cleaning is a never-ending task, the WiFi is poor, it’s always chilly, and you can’t simply nip into one room to get something – there’s a lot of walking involved.

‘I know that I am so lucky to live in a place like this. But it can be hard,’ she said.

‘There’s so much to do, there’s so much work, and there’s so much care that you have to put into it.

‘More than once, I have to admit, I’ve thought, “I don’t know if I can do this. I’m just going to sell this.”

‘But I could never sell a place that’s been in my family for almost 900 years.’
