TikTok users have left cocktail fans divided after adding parmesan cheese to their espresso martinis – but mixologists insist it’s ‘wonderful’.

Jordan Hughes, from Massachusetts, took to his TikTok @highproofpreacher to give the trend a try.

The social media star – who is a self-confessed cocktail fan – said: ‘A bartender friend of mine told me I had to make this espresso martini with parmesan cheese in it.’

‘He could just be trolling me but we are going to try it anyway. Got some ice to chill the glass here.

‘Got some fresh espresso from the local coffee shop an ounce of coffee liqueur, now do two ounces of vodka, a pinch of sea salt and shake.’

He continued: ‘Now I should just garnish it with coffee beans and drink it like this, but instead we are going to grate some parmesan cheese over the top of it.

TikTok users started the craze of adding parmesan to the classic espresso martini cocktail. Jordan Hughes took to his TikTok @highproofpreacher to give the trend a try

‘This feels crazy my goodness, ok let’s taste it, I regret to inform you that was kind of awesome.’

The clip, which racked up over 300,000 views, was met with mixed views.

One person wrote: ‘What?! I have to try this – it’s like a coffee cheese I had in Europe.’

Another said: ‘I tried it and I can report back that it’s just crazy enough to work! It’s wonderful!.’

While someone else wrote: ‘This is easily the worst flavour combination I’ve ever seen on a drink.’

Abby Matthews, mixology expert and Director of The Cocktail Co told Metro: ‘The idea of adding parmesan to an espresso martini might sound unusual at first.

‘But it’s a flavour combination that you’re likely already familiar with from a lot of popular breakfast meals – take an egg and cheese omelette with a coffee for example.

How to make a parmesan espresso martini

Ingredients (Serves 2):

Ice

100ml vodka

50ml freshly brewed espresso coffee

50ml coffee liqueur

Parmesan cheese

Method:

1. Put two martini glasses in the fridge to chill.

2. Put handful of ice, the vodka, espresso and coffee liqueur in the cocktail shaker

3. Shake until the outside of the cocktail shaker feels icy cold.

4. Grate parmesan shavings directly on top.

‘And while the cocktail is perfectly delicious by itself, the addition of a salty, savoury flavour profile from the parmesan can balance nicely with the cocktail’s sweet and bitter flavours, adding a unique depth that will leave your tastebuds pleasantly surprised.’

According to the expert, cheese and coffee are an unexpected delight because the tasting notes that we attribute to coffee — nuts, caramel, flowers and fruit — are often present in cheese.

The practice of putting cheese into coffee isn’t a new concept –  having originated from the Saami people of Scandinavian countries like Finland, Norway, and Sweden.

A northern Scandinavian tradition, Kaffeost, is a drink in which cubes of cheese are released into a cup of coffee.
