Star of The Crown and Game of Thrones Tobias Menzies hasn’t featured in Starz’s fantastical history series since the fourth season, but he has nevertheless remained a vital part of Outlander’s legacy. With the series set to return for a seventh instalment next year, co-leads Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan have revealed Tobias is near the top of the list of cast mates they want to make a comeback.

Claire Fraser star Caitriona has tipped her former cast mate Tobias to eventually make a return to the Outlander universe.

In a recent Instagram Q&A with Jamie Fraser star Sam, she named some of her favourite co-stars and characters she’d like to work with again.

“Of all your former cast mates who have you enjoyed working with the most, or who would you like to bring back?” Sam asked.

“Or characters? Shall we say characters, because that sounds like favouritism?”

Caitriona admitted: “That’s a really hard question because if I could I’d bring them all back!”

She began by naming Duncan Lacroix, aka Murtagh Fitzgibbons, as one of the best candidates for bringing back in a future season.

“Obviously, we would have Duncan back any day of the week,” she said.

“We miss him, we love him,” she added, to which Sam agreed: “We do.”

Sadly, Murtagh was killed in season five during the Battle at Alamance, dying peacefully in Jamie’s arms, so a reprisal is unlikely for now.

However, Tobias’ dual roles as Claire’s first husband Frank and ‘Black Jack’ Randall could make him a more viable option to bring back into the fold.

“Good old ‘Mingis’. We’d have ‘Mingis’ back any day of the week,” Caitriona said.

“For anybody else, Mingis is, weirdly, how the Scottish people – that’s how they would pronounce Menzies. I don’t understand how the ‘G’ comes in.”

“It is a little weird,” Scottish star Sam agreed, before adding he’d also love to see Tobias return.

Claire’s historian husband was tragically killed in a nasty car accident before he was able to make a fresh start in England.

Moreover, Jamie also took revenge against his abusive captor, killing him during the Battle of Culloden in the 18th Century.

While the death of both of Tobias’ characters probably rules out any return in the current timeline, Sam still has hope.

He assured Caitriona: “We are a show that does time-travel, we do flashbacks.

“We do the cool flashback at the start of this season that’s just gone. So, I guess, there’s space for it, right?”

To set up the latest season, the premiere episode Echoes flashes back to Jamie’s prison days before settling in Fraser’s Ridge.

There he meets stubborn Protestant Tom Christie (Mark Lewis Jones), who makes his way to North Carolina to wreak more havoc on the Frasers’ new home.

Now Outlander has set a precedent for flashbacks to several years before the main action, could Tobias make a surprise return to reveal more about Frank and his cruel ancestor?

Outlander season 7 is in production and seasons 1 to 6 are streaming on StarzPlay now.
