The Last of Us’ Pedro Pascal gushes over co-star in MTV speech

The Last of Us: Episode 9 preview trailer

The Last of Us stars beamed into the awards via video to collect their Golden Popcorn trophy for Best Duo.

Series lead Pedro Pascal, who portrays post-apocalyptic hero Joel Miller, was clearly emotional as he held up two trophies on behalf of his co-star Bella Ramsey.

“Bella, if you want your Golden Popcorn, you’ll have to come get it,” he said to the camera.

“That way I can see you. I miss you, I love you. You are the duo. You are me, I am you, we are we.

“We love MTV. Thank you MTV Movie & TV Awards. Thank you to the fans. Gosh, it feels like there isn’t anything we wouldn’t do for you because of how much you’ve embraced the show.

“I wish Bella and I were together. But we will be soon,” he teased. “So stay tuned. Thank you, we love you.”

Ramsey was equally overwhelmed as she apologised for not being able to attend the awards with her co-star.

“I don’t know what to say really,” she said. “It’s probably a good job that I’m not there tonight.

“This is bad enough, having to record a video because I don’t know what to say other than ‘thank you’.”

This year’s live MTV Awards were scrapped in favour of a pre-taped show due to the ongoing writers’ strike.

TV presenter Drew Barrymore confirmed she would be pulling out of hosting in solidarity with the strike last week.

Pascal and Ramsey were just two of several stars who sent in video speeches for the pre-recorded show which has received a mixed response from fans.

The awards also began with a surreal sketch featuring Barrymore reprising her iconic Never Been Kissed role Josie Geller crossing over with the likes of The White Lotus and Cocaine Bear.

The Mandalorian star later accepted a third award when The Last of Us was crowned this year’s Best Show and stood in solidarity with the WGA.

Meanwhile, millions of fans are already eagerly anticipating the second season of The Last of Us after this year’s first outing became a huge hit for HBO.

The acclaimed drama starred Pascal and Ramsey as survivors of a worldwide pandemic which populates the world with flesh-eating fungal zombies.

Based on the smash-hit PlayStation game, season one concluded with Joel going on a murderous rampage to save Ellie when he discovers she’s about to be killed in the hopes of finding a cure.

The Last of Us is available to watch on HBO Max in the USA and Sky Go and NOW in the UK.
