An Argentine woman who moved to the Mexican tourist hotspot of Playa del Carmen to further her modeling career has died after her sister found her in a bathtub with her hands tied and bruises on her body.

Agostina Jalabert, 31, is said to have committed suicide on February 18, according to investigation findings from the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office.

However, a lawyer hired by Jalabert’s family reviewed the autopsy and has been in contact with Argentina’s Foreign Ministry to pressure Mexican authorities into reclassifying the case as a femicide.

‘The autopsy, according to the lawyer, reveals that this is a femicide due to the injuries my daughter has,’ Jalabert’s father, Edgardo Jalabert, told Argentine news network TN.

Argentine model Agostina Jalabert was found dead February 18 at an apartment she was renting in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Mexican authorities have ruled her death a suicide, but the 31-year-old woman’s family are pressuring them to reopen the investigation and reclassify it as a femicide because the autopsy showed that her body was covered in bruises

The family of Agostina Jalabert (left) suspects that her boyfriend Juan Reverter (right) may have murdered the 31-year-old model at the Playa del Carmen apartment the were living in together since December, when he went to visit her and resumed the relationship that had been broke off since June 2021

Family lawyer Betina Teuly added that while they did not want to interfere with the investigation, ‘there is sufficient evidence’ to prove that Agostina Jalabert was murdered by her boyfriend, Juan Reverter.

Argentine newspaper Clarin reported that South American nation’s ambassador to Mexico, Carlos Tomada, called Edgardo Jalabert and told him that prosecutor’s office was looking into the investigation to make sure that it was not a suicide.

Edgardo Jalabert said that his daughter, the oldest of his three, broke up with Reverter in June 2021 after he and his wide rescued her from a ‘toxic’ relationship and moved her out of the apartment the couple shared at the time.

Agostina Jalabert resumed her relationship with Reverter in December 2022 and he ended up moving in with her after visiting her for Christmas.

Bruna, Agostina Jalabert’s pet dog, led the model’s sister to the bathroom where she was discovered dead. The Mexican prosecution informed Argentina’s ambassador that they are looking into the investigation again to see if there is evidence that will rule her death being classified as a suicide

Juan Reverter vanished from Mexico after his girlfriend Agostina Jalabert was found dead at the Playa del Carmen apartment she was renting after relocating from Argentina to pursue better opportunities in modeling. Reverter, also from Argentina, is accused by the 31-year-old woman’s family of murdering her

On February 18, Candela Jalabert (left) discovered her sister Agostina Jalabert (right) dead in the apartment they were sharing in Playa del Carmen. Jalabert last saw her sister alive February 17 and upon returning to the apartment was informed by security that her sister and her boyfriend, Juan Reverter, had fought and that neighbors had called the police. Reverter has not been seen or heard from since Agostina Jalabert’s death

Candela Jalabert, 21, who joined her sister in moving to Mexico in the summer, last saw her alive February 17 and returned to the apartment the following morning at 7am and was informed by security that that police had visited the apartment after neighbors reported screams coming from the home on two occasions.

She attempted to enter the apartment by keying in a security code, which was rejected.

Candela Jalabert started banging on the door and was warned by security that she risked being kicked out of the building.

Reverter eventually answered the door and claimed that Agostina Jalabert was sleeping.

However, her sister’s pet dog guided her to the bathroom where she discovered her sister sitting in the bathtub with a towel wrapped around her hands.

‘This character said he was sleeping when Candela arrived and asked for his sister,’ Edgardo Jalabert said. ‘The dog, Bruna, led her to the bathroom and there they found Agostina hanging from the towel rack, sitting or semi-sitting, (three feet) from the floor.’

Agostina Jalabert’s uncle, Germán Jalabert, told online news portal Pagina 12 that his niece was not suicidal and doubted that she would have taken her own life.

‘The towel rack was about (four feet) from the floor. It’s hard to think that a person can hang from a height lower than their own height,’ he explained. ‘Candela saw two or three blows, but she didn’t stop there because seeing her sister in that situation, she despaired and tried to revive her.’

Agostina Jalabert moved in 2022 to the Mexican tourist hot spot Playa del Carmen to pursue better opportunities as a model

He criticized the Mexican authorities and said their investigation process was filled with errors.

“None of the basic protocols were applied to investigate and find out the real causes of his death,” Germán Jalabert said. “The boyfriend was not arrested, his phone was not seized, nor were toxicological tests carried out, nor was it verified if he had any injuries.”

Teuly said that Reverter had scratches on his face at the time that Agostina Jalabert was found dead.

‘He ran like a coward,’ she said.

The family believes he may be in Canada, where he once lived, in Asia or in San Francisco.

Edgardo Jalabert said that Reverter’s father reportedly traveled to Mexico and helped him abandon the country.

“He never communicated with us and he did not give any explanation, since he lived with my daughter for the last two months,” he said.
