Boulder County Sheriff's Office: Landlord killed resident before shooting himself

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office concluded Thursday that a landlord killed a resident before killing himself in March.

Robert Reid, 52, the former landlord of a residence in the 3900 block of Ridge Road in unincorporated Boulder County near Nederland, acted alone in killing Timothy Crimmins, 61, before taking his own life via a gunshot wound, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.

On March 16, Boulder County Sheriff deputies were dispatched to the residence after being asked to check on Crimmins as his family had not heard from him for several days, according to the release.

Upon arriving on scene, deputies discovered Crimmins’ body hidden under a tarp outside of the home. The death was later determined to be as a result of a gunshot wound.

After finding Crimmins, a deputy returned to his patrol car which was out of sight of the home to get additional equipment, the release said. The deputy noticed that a vehicle had parked in the area after deputies initially arrived and backup was called for.

Reid was found dead in the vehicle from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The release said it was clear Reid shot himself after arriving near the home and seeing police vehicles near the scene. The release said a significant number of cleaning supplies were found in the vehicle.

The Sheriff’s Office said Reid was likely preparing to dispose of the victim’s body and clean the crime scene, according to the news release.

The Sheriff’s Office then began its investigation, including speaking to family, friends, neighbors, store personnel, searching the home and reviewing evidence and law enforcement calls to the home, according to the release.

The Sheriff’s Office was able to determine that Reid was alone at the time he brought the cleaning supplies, and Crimmins’ gunshot wounds were consistent with Reid’s shotgun and ammunition.

Between January and March, deputies had responded to 11 calls by Crimmins or Reid who lived in separate structures on the property. The two had lengthy, ongoing disputes regarding rent payments, possible evictions and payments for work completed on the home, the release said.

Autopsies completed were consistent with the detectives’ investigation, and the District Attorney’s Office agreed with the conclusion of the Sheriff’s Office, according to the release.
