How many hot dogs has Joey Chestnut eaten?

Joey Chestnut is best known for his triumphs at the annual Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest in Brooklyn, New York.

He first won the competition in 2007 and by 2022 he had officially gobbled down 1,152 hot dogs at the yearly event.

Of course, Joey, nicknamed Jaws, will have eaten a lot more hot dogs during training, qualifying events, and recreationally – which suggests the true number is actually MUCH higher.

Hot dog connoisseur Chestnut is hoping to win his 16th Nathan's Hot Dog Eating contest on July 4, 2023.

As well as consecutively winning titles for his eating skills, Joey continually raises the bar by setting world records.

In July 2009, he set a world record by downing 68 hot dogs and went on to break this record in 2013 after consuming 69.

Chestnut broke his own contest record in 2020, consuming an astounding 75 hot dogs.

Then, in 2021, he consumed 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes, again breaking his own world record.

In 2022 he still won the event but only managed 63 hot dogs.

A few weeks after the 2021 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating contest, Joey's fans expressed concern for the eating champ after a study emerged suggesting that there could be serious health implications from eating the fast-food favorite.

The report, conducted by researchers from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, found that a person loses on average 36 minutes of their life for every beef hot dog on a bun they eat.

Other foods linked to minutes lost from healthy life included sugary drinks, burgers, and breakfast sandwiches – items that Chestnut also competitively consumes.

Why is Joey Chestnut known for eating hot dogs?

Chestnut, who was born in Fulton County, Kentucky, rose to fame after becoming extremely successful in eating events.

As of 2023, he triumphed in the world-famous competition 15 times while continuing to improve his personal best and set world records.

Joey, who was once engaged to Neslie Ricasa, has revealed that he trains by fasting and stretching his stomach with milk, water, and protein supplements.

Chestnut has said: "This sport isn't about eating.

"It's about drive and dedication, and at the end of the day, hot dog eating challenges both my body and my mind."
