Fed up Barcelona deli charges tourists who visit for Instagram

Plenty of tourists are about to get a little shock, as one famous spot in Barcelona, Spain, has had enough of ‘photo and run’ tourists.

It’s now become normal in our influencer, social media-heavy culture to go to places and take pictures without necessarily properly experiencing the place being snapped, or spending any money there.

Well, one historic deli in Barcelona says enough.

Now charging tourists who just want to look, a sign has been placed in theentrance of Queviures Múrria that reads: ‘Visit just looking (inside) €5 x person, thank you.’

The tapas spot has been in business for over 100 years, originally operating as a coffee roasters, and staff are frankly fed up of tourists who want to pile in with their cameras out – then leave without spending a penny.

It’s a favoured spot due to it’s vintage appearance and style, which makes it very Insta-worthy. The rows of cured meats, cheese, oils and wine also help.

Apparently, no charges have yet been made to tourists and surprisingly, it’s been good for business so far.

Deli manager Toni Merion said the sign was initially put up to stop tourists from affecting workflow and the business – they don’t actually want to charge people who are genuinely looking to see what’s inside, but they do want to highlight how annoying Inst-tourism can be.

‘We have not charged any money from people who just want to come in and have a look, but that is not the point,’ he told i.

The sign was originally created as a joke, but it has been enough to discourage those without genuine interest about what’s on offer. It’s also boosting sales, as tourists who stop for a photo now are more likely to buy stuff from the shop.

Tourists are more polite now too, so that cheeky sign has paid off.
