Antiques Roadshow guest gasps at eye-watering valuation of watch bought for £40

Antiques Roadshow Gust blown away by brooch valuation

One guest was blown away after learning the watch he had bought for £40 was worth some serious money.

During a recent episode of BBC’s Antiques Roadshow, viewers were taken to Powis Castle in Wales where people brought in their items to be valued.

One of those included a man who had taken his watch to be inspected by expert Alastair Chandler.

Looking at the watch instantly, he said: “This is probably one of the most stylish watches I’ve certainly seen today and certainly seen in a long time.

“It’s a beautiful watch, is it something you inherited?”

However, the guest revealed the item wasn’t passed down to him as he brought it himself as part of a bundle box in a sale.

He told the expert: “I paid approximately £40, there were all sorts of bits in it.

“There were some tools that I wanted, but in the bottom, there were some dead watches and amongst them was that one.”

The guest told Alastair when he got the watch, it wasn’t working and was missing a sweep hand, although he took it to get fixed 10 years ago.

Giving the guest more information about the Jaeger-LeCoultre watch, Alastair noted there was a marking which read “Asprey” on the front.

He said: “Asprey, is one of the most famous jewellers in London and they were retailed for Jaeger-LeCoultre.

“But, what I find interesting about this watch is just the design of the case, it really oozes style and class.”

Revealing it was made in the 1930s, the expert told the guest the watch designers were always at the forefront of design during that time.

When it came down to giving the guest an estimate of how much the watch could fetch at an auction, he said: “I’d be delighted to of found this, but to of found it at the bottom of a box? I think is quite incredible.

“I think in today’s current market, with the interest in watches and with Jaeger and given the Asprey retailing name, I think someone would easily pay £1,500 to £2,000.”

Stunned, the guest replied: “Woah, it’s not a bad day’s shopping, was it? I’m quite amazed by that actually. Thank you very much indeed, that’s really good
