Love Islands Maya Jama urged to quit whilst she can as viewing figures dip

Maya Jama has been urged to "follow in the footsteps of Laura Whitmore" and "quit Love Island whilst she can."

The brand new series of the sun-soaked ITV2 dating show kicked off in June – and it’s fair to say it’s delivered plenty of villa drama.

Bristol babe Maya, 28 is back on hosting duties for series 10 – following on from her Winter Love Island stint in January.

However, despite the reception from fans, it was reported that the show got off to something of a bumpy start when it came to viewing figures.

Apparently, the show scraped in barely a million viewers for the second episode of its much-hyped summer series.

Whereas for the launch episode, it emerged that an average of 1.3million people tuned in, which went up to 3 million overnight.

This marked a major difference from last year’s summer launch figures – with the 2022 premiere episode garnering an average of 2.4m.

And now Maya, who took on the hosting role after Laura Whitmore left last year, has been issued a warning over her future on the show.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star, Will Hobson PR, Director at Rise at Seven noted that Love Island seems be having “the X Factor effect” at the moment.

He explained: “Viewers have seen enough and become bored of the format.”

Will went on to claim that Maya should take a leaf out of previous host Laura’s book and “quit before the show is doomed.”

“Maya is a fan favourite but the show is dipping in popularity, I’d follow in the footsteps of Laura Whitmore and quit whilst you’re ahead before the show is doomed,” he said.

However, another PR expert claimed if Maya did quit the show – it could indeed backfire on her.

“There is little to be earned by Maya Jama were she to jump ship at this point,” said Edward Coram James, CEO, Go Up.

“It would make her look fickle to potential future employers, who might be concerned that she runs at the first sign of trouble.”

Edward added: “She should wait it out for at least another year before even considering leaving."

Maya herself even hit back at claims no one is watching the show – after it was revealed that the new series has been streamed online almost 200 million times.

It was also the biggest 16-24 audience on any channel since the World Cup in 2022.

Maya headed over to Twitter to share a Bristol Post article which detailed the incredible viewing figures from this year’s “elite” series.

She wrote: “The papers were so quick to say viewers are low but the honeys are watching online on @ITVX. This season is ELITE thank you very much.”

Love Island airs nightly on ITV2 and ITVX at 9pm
