Coldplay’s Chris Martin felt ‘worthless’ after split from Gwyneth Paltrow
They’ve remained close friends since their “conscious uncoupling” in 2014, so you could have been forgiven for thinking Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow’s breakup was breezy.
But Chris admits he felt “completely worthless and nothing to anybody” for a whole year.
“He was in a lot of pain,” says Coldplay’s former manager, Phil Harvey.
“I was worried about him to the extent that I was just glad to get a text, just to know he was OK.” Chris, who describes himself as a “mess” at the time, says of his low points: “It was pretty touch and go.”
Fortunately, Chris had bandmates Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion, along with Phil, to help him. He adds: “It was a challenging period. It was a journey from ultimate loneliness to ultimate togetherness.”
Chris speaks candidly about the couple’s split in a new documentary marking 20 years of Coldplay. In it, they discuss addiction and anxiety, after critics blasted them as “music to wet the bed to”. But Chris happily accepts being a “figure of ridicule”.
“I think everything we’ve done is s***,” he shrugs at one point. “That’s what fires me up to do the next thing.”
Coldplay’s A Head Full Of Dreams lands on Amazon Prime on Wednesday.
