Could This 'Frozen 2' Character Be Elsa's Girlfriend?
Fans refuse to let go of the campaign to #GiveElsaAGirlfriend.
In case you missed it, the Frozen 2 teaser trailer recently dropped, and it hints that a huge disaster is about to hit Arandelle. But instead of panicking over the fate of the kingdom, fans have fixated on one unfamiliar face. Could this young lady be the love interest we’ve wanted for Elsa for so long?
The trailer shows Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, and Olaf facing several grim situations. “Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, and Olaf are going far in the forest to know the truth about an ancient mystery of their kingdom,” the logline reads. Elsa puts her ice-wielding powers to the test to cross an ocean, Anna gets lost in between enormous mountains, and Kristoff directs a herd of reindeer to charge against who knows what. Our favorite singing snowman, Olaf, barely gets any screen time, but in one scene, he stands alongside Elsa looking frightened as a mysterious cloud of mist surrounds him.
This grim set of scenes doesn’t give away the film’s plot, but fans don’t seem to care. Instead, eagle-eyed viewers are obsessing over a mysterious female character they think could be Elsa’s Princess Charming. (There’s also a new male character, but no one seems to care much.)
Their speculation isn’t unfounded, though. Last year, Frozen co-director Jennifer Lee refused to confirm or deny Elsa would get a girlfriend in the sequel. She said it’s “something that gets thrown around a lot” and writers weren’t closing the door on making Elsa the first gay Disney princess.
“Where we’re going with it, we have tons of conversations about it, and we’re really conscientious about these things,” she said at the time. “For me… Elsa’s every day telling me where she needs to go, and she’ll continue to tell us. I always write from character-out, and where Elsa is and what Elsa’s doing in her life, she’s telling me every day. We’ll see where we go.”
Now that the teaser trailer is here, fans are wasting no time feeding into the movement.
Kristen Bell, who voices Anna, added to the insanity when she made a cryptic comment to a fan with “give Elsa a girlfriend” as a display name.
What’s more, Evan Rachel Wood — the actress who fans speculate voices the new character — is openly bisexual. Having a member of the LGBTQ+ community voice the first queer Disney character would be a game changer.
We’ll find out more when Frozen 2 hits theaters on November 22, 2019.
