Aerosmith’s Joe Perry rushed to hospital after collapsing at Billy Joel concert

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry has been rushed to hospital after experiencing breathing problems following an impromptu performance at a Billy Joel concert.

The 68-year-old rocker had walked out on stage at Madison Square Garden to jam along with Billy Joel for a surprise rendition of Walk This Way, but minutes after the gig had ended he collapsed in his dressing room.

Paramedics were called and treated Joe with oxygen for 40 minutes and had to use a specialist tool to clear his airway.

He was strapped to a stretcher and taken to a New York hospital by ambulance on Saturday night.

"Joe Perry experienced shortness of breath and was treated backstage by paramedics who gave the guitarist oxygen and used a tracheal tube to clear his airway before taking him to a hospital," a rep for the musician said in a statement.

"This morning Perry remains in the hospital where he is alert and responsive."

According to TMZ, Joe has been experiencing breathing issues "for the last few weeks", and they came to a head on Saturday. His mystery illness is thought to involve congestion on the lungs.

But sources said Joe is "awake" and "doing well" following his ordeal.

The guitarist had a similar backstage collapse in July 2016 after performing with his supergroup the Hollywood Vampires, which is made up of Perry, Johnny Depp and Alice Cooper.

He appeared to stagger across the stage in front of concerned fans and collapsed as he got off.

Paramedics rushed Joe to a Brooklyn hospital for treatment, while the remaining band members finished the gig.

Joe later blamed "dehydration and exhaustion" for the health scare.
