Gorka Marquez apologises to Katie McGlynn over Strictly exit as she addresses backlash

Strictly Come Dancing stars Gorka Marquez, 31, and Katie McGlynn, 28, performed an American Smooth to Dr John’s version of Cruella De Vil as part of movie themed week on Saturday night. Despite their best efforts, head judge Shirley Ballas decided to save Judi and Graziano after judges were torn between the couples.

Following their exit, the professional dancer felt he had to apologise to the actress for not getting her further in the competition.

On her Instagram post, he wrote: “I’m so proud of you and your work! You have been a joy to work with.

“Thank you for these three weeks full of laughs and jokes.

“Thanks for make this strictly series so special! Sorry I couldn’t make it longer for you!”

His message came after the Hollyoaks star spoke out about their departure.

She shared a picture of herself and the pair from movie week, in view of her 326,000 followers.

As part of a lengthy post, she wrote: “I’ve loved every second of rehearsals with @gorka_marquez and performing each week!

“I’m really gutted that my time on the show has come to an end so soon, I feel like I had so much more to give and really wanted to carry on pushing myself and learning from the professionals that I am absolutely in awe of.”

She went on to to say that the show was out of her comfort zone as she hadn’t danced before.

Katie added: “I think it’s time for me to get back to what I do best and love the most… acting!

“This journey has been such a rollercoaster of emotions but I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

The actress thanked her fans, including Dame Emma Thompson, for their support.

On Twitter today, the ex Coronation Street star urged people to “be kind” as she addressed negative comments.

She wrote: “Just wanted to say a huge thank you for everyones lovely comments and messages!

“I’ll miss @bbcstrictly and @gorkamarquez1 terribly!

“But please remember to be kind with what you share on social media, none of us are dancers, we’ve all working hard and try our best each week! x.”

Many of Katie’s Twitter fans flocked to her post to comment.

Jan wrote: “The Strictly make up and clothing team worked magic on you and Gorka. I loved your routine.

“You both got into the spirit of it and it worked. So sorry you lost out.”

Nicki added: “This is why I like you Katie, recognising the affect some of those supporting you could have!”

Amber Moran penned: “You did amazing and I’m still gutted you’ve gone. Your dances were the highlight of my week xx.”
