Greg James’ brings the fun to Radio 1 Breakfast Show on his first day

A lion at Bristol Zoo was his first guest, the Red Arrows rode bicycles around the BBC in formation, and Calvin Harris advised how to keep squirrels away from watermelons.

Radio 1 DJ Greg James got off to a great start when he took over the Breakfast Show on Monday, and fulfilled his promise to put listeners at the heart of the broadcast from its beginning, even letting them choose his first song.

(It was the late Avicii’s Levels, in case you weren’t up at 6.30am.)

“I want it to be interactive,” he told the Mirror ahead of his launch.

“Even if you’re not literally interacting, I want people to be coming up with answers in their head.

“I want it to celebrate the lives of the listeners. They are the stars of the show.”

With quizzes, phone-ins and a listener even interviewing musician Calvin Harris – in a conversation that led to the keen watermelon-grower dishing out gardening tips – that was apparent.

Of his young demographic, Greg, 32, adds: “I don’t want anyone to feel excluded. It’s dangerous to say, ‘If you’re over 30, stop listening to Radio 1’.”

With positive reviews, the DJ seemed pleased with the listeners’ response – and especially pleased with his Red Arrows coup.

“Couldn’t have asked for better nonsense to start the new show,” he said, proudly.

“I loved it. Let’s do some more until I’m sacked.”
