Kate Garraway getting help behind scenes at ITV as husband’s coronavirus battle continues

GMB: Ben Shephard tells Kate Garraway to 'hold on'

Kate Garraway, 53, has faced a difficult year as her husband Derek Draper, 53, has battled near-fatal coronavirus and has remained in hospital since March. Her close friend and colleague Lorraine Kelly has now revealed that Dr Hilary Jones has been aiding her behind the scenes, with “real empathy” and “common-sense advice”.

Lorraine shared that the TV doctor is renowned for helping his colleagues and has especially been there for Kate.

She said of Dr Hilary: “He has been an absolute hero throughout this pandemic.

“Bringing clarity and common-sense advice with real empathy and behind the scenes he has been helping Kate [Garraway], whose husband is currently still in hospital.

“And all of our team and crew who have been concerned and worried about themselves and their loved ones.

“He is a very special man,” she added.

Kate recently shared that it was “unclear” if she could visit Derek under the new Tier 4 guidelines issued by the Prime Minister last week.

A thoughtful fan had messaged the star following Boris Johnson’s statement that London and parts of the south would be plunged into a stricter lockdown from midnight on Sunday.

They typed: “I truly hope in all of this @kategarraway & her children get to form a bubble and to see Derek.

“It’s hard for all of us, but harder for her as her situation is unique. Ella-Rose will keep you busy I’m sure.”

Kate retweeted the concerned post, and typed alongside it: “I hope so too Fatimah – not quite clear at the moment but thank you for thinking of me and the others in the same situation xxx.”

Underneath others said the star was “in their thoughts” as they responded with messages of support.

One typed: “You & people in your situation are in my thoughts daily. I thought I was strong when I lost my husband unexpectedly 11 years ago. Nothing compared to you the strength you’ve shown, kindness & thinking of others. I can only imagine how hard it must be & hope you can see Derek. xx.”

Another replied: “Defo and people may be disappointed by today’s news but just give a thought for Kate and her family ….no comparison.”

A third commented: “I know it’s such a hard time for all of you @kategarraway but my thoughts and prayers are with you all at the Garraway household and god bless you all.”

Derek was placed in an induced coma while fighting the worst of the virus.

Since being under medical care it has been difficult for his family to visit due to ongoing restrictions.

Kate became emotional on Good Morning Britain last week as she spoke to intensive care nurses at the Whittington hospital, who had cared for Derek when he first became ill.

At the end of Friday’s show, Kate spoke with nurses Kathleen and Karen who had cared for Derek in the Spring.

She said: “When he went into the Whittington when he first got sick and his life was saved by you, I’m getting emotional now.

“I’ve never spoken to you because we weren’t allowed to visit and it was a chaotic time for me when all that was going on and I was often unable to speak directly to the staff that were caring for him, so thank you so much and for all, you’re doing for so many people,” she added.

Watch Lorraine on Christmas Day from 9am on ITV.
