Meghan Markle Surprised a Smart Works Client via Video Call Before a Job Interview
Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, just gave a client of one of her dearest patronages, Smart Works, the surprise of a lifetime. Per People, the duchess volunteered to speak with the client ahead of her job interview to wish her good luck.
In the clip, shared to the Smart Works Twitter account, Meghan shares a bit of advice, as well as compliments the woman on being a “beacon of hope” for being so resilient in her job search during such a trying time in the world.
A source close to the duchess tells BAZAAR that “The Duchess has been keeping in touch with her Patronages, as well as organizations she is close to, during this crisis to hear how they are operating and continuing to support people at this time. At the end of last month The Duchess was also able to join a mentoring session with one of the Smart Works clients, which is also included in the update.”
Smart Works, one of the duchess’s many patronages, is a charity that helps women find employment, provides coaching tips for interviews, and also supplies professional attire for said interviews. With the ongoing uncertainty surrounding coronavirus across the globe, Smart Works has transitioned its program to virtual services that connect volunteers with clients digitally and send care packages to those embarking on job interviews.
For her surprise video-call conversation, Meghan wore a maroon-hued sweater with layered gold necklaces and pulled her hair back into a half-ponytail style.
“You seem incredibly confident and prepared. I know everyone here is so excited,” said Meghan. “When I was reading about what your interests are, and especially you have a big focus in mental health as well, right? Psychology? I think that’s excellent.”
After the client thanked Meghan for taking the time to call, the duchess assured her that it was her pleasure to be able to speak with her and volunteer alongside Smart Works.
“I just wanted to be able to call in and wish you the best of luck and my fingers are crossed for you. There’s so much going on in the world right now and to be such a beacon of hope and focusing on getting through it, and all the positivity that we just want to send your way, and to make sure you can get on the other side of this too, and have such a great opportunity there,” said Meghan. “It’s a pleasure to support [Smart Works], you see how great they do and how many people they help and that’s what it’s all about. I’ve been really proud to be able to be their patron, but it’s an easy yes when you have such incredible women helping you.”
Meghan applauded the work of her patronage in a statement, acknowledging her pride in the charity’s quick transition into virtual services due to the ongoing global health crisis.
“It’s been such an honor to meet and learn from so many talented women in the Smart Works network over the years, and recently to see the amazing work they’re doing to adapt their programs to the reality of this pandemic,” the statement read.
