Brazilian Bum Bum Cream review: We tested out Sol de Janeiro's viral skin-tightening body cream | The Sun

EVEN if you’ve never tried it, you’ve maybe heard of it. After all, the name itself is pretty memorable: Bum Bum Cream.

Actually pronounced ‘boom boom’, Sol de Janeiro’s Brazilian Bum Bum Cream has a cult following on TikTok and among celebrities like Selena Gomez, Hailey Bieber and Hilary Duff.

The Brazilian-inspired product is one of the most popular body creams sold on Amazon too; yet at £33.88 on the site for a large 240ml format – or £21 for a smaller 75ml version from Boots – it’s definitely not what you’d call cheap.

So is this viral sensation body cream worth the hype? We've done a Brazilian Bum Bum Cream review to make sure…

What is Brazilian Bum Bum Cream?

Brazilian Bum Bum Cream is a body cream that is infused with the extract of guaraná, a tropical fruit from the Amazon. It is made by a company called Sol de Janeiro, which means ‘Sun of January’ in Portuguese – making reference to the hottest period of the Brazilian summer.

Sol de Janeiro makes loads of different products for body, face and hair, all inspired by the tropical climes of South America. But it’s the Brazilian Bum Bum Cream, which was launched in 2016, that has long been its best-seller.

In fact, Brazilian Bum Bum Cream was one of beauty chain Sephora’s top-selling products the year of its launch. And even eight years later, it seems to only be finding more and more fans.

Why are people obsessed with Brazilian Bum Bum Cream?

There are a few reasons why celebrities and influencers are obsessed with Brazilian Bum Bum Cream.

First of all, the cream is beautifully packaged in a bright yellow tub that can’t help but remind you of sunshine.

Secondly, its followers say that is both effective at moisturising skin and improving its tone. More on that later.

But the main reason many people love Sol de Janerio Brazilian Bum Bum Cream is that it smells absolutely amazing. Seriously, incredible. Its signature scent, dubbed "Cheirosa ‘62", is a mix of salted caramel, pistachio and vanilla, with notes of jasmine petals, almond and sandalwood.

Somehow, all these aromas coming together reminds people of a sun-kissed holiday on the beach. It’s so evocative that one sniff really can brighten your mood.

What does Brazilian Bum Bum Cream do?

Here’s the thing; Brazilian Bum Bum Cream isn’t just about smelling great, but about results too.

The guaraná extract inside the cream contains high levels of caffeine, and is said to tighten the appearance of skin. This makes it especially well-suited to use on dimpled areas of thighs, tummies, backs of arms and, erm, your bum bum!

The cream also contains replenishing coconut oil and super-hydrating cupuaçu butter (a bit like shea butter), which absorbs quickly and delivers fatty acids into the skin, leaving it feeling really soft.

There is antioxidant açaí oil and selenium-rich Brazil nut oil in there too, which help to give skin some protection from environmental stressors and work to leave it glowing.

In short, Brazilian Bum Bum Cream has been designed to leave your skin feeling soft and super-moisturised, looking its very best and smelling totally fantastic.

What's it like to use Brazilian Bum Bum Cream?

"You smell amazing!"is what I got told over and over by friends, family and colleagues for the week I used Brazilian Bum Bum Cream.

And I agreed with them. As soon as I cracked open the jar to apply it after my shower, that intoxicating Cheirosa ‘62 scent transported me to sandy shores and swaying palms. Never mind that it was rainy weather in the UK, I felt like I was in sunny Rio!

The scent alone was a real emotional boost. Truly, I felt good every time I slapped the cream on, as if I had just come home from the beach. What’s more, it replaced the need to use perfume and other scented products, even for hours after I had first applied it.

But more than that, Brazilian Bum Bum Cream made my skin feel great. Unlike some moisturisers that can feel thin or oily, this cream was thick and luxurious, almost like the texture of body butter (or yummy cake icing!). It didn’t feel greasy or sticky when applied, and a little went a long way.

It sunk in really quickly too. Within a couple of minutes of putting it on my skin was left with a soft moisturised feel, gentle glow and heady scent, so I never worried about getting my clothes covered in cream – even if I was getting dressed in a rush.

The verdict: Is Brazilian Bum Bum Cream worth it?

There’s no question that this cream is an investment. You’ll pay over £20 for a small 75ml jar and about £38 for the 240ml version.

It’s worth noting that Sol de Janeiro has also launched 240ml Brazilian Bum Bum Cream Refills, using 89% less plastic than the original packaging.

They’re a few quid cheaper in most cases than the initial jar – not ground-breaking, but it can help finances if you develop a long-term addiction to the product. You just have to wash your existing jar in the dishwasher, and then slip the refill into place.

Personally, I think the combination of aroma and quality of moisturisation makes the cream worthy of buying. I didn’t see my skin texture firm up huge amounts in just a week, but Sol de Janeiro doesn’t promise a timeline on that. And anyway, even without that element, it made me look and feel fantastic every time I used it.

Saying all that, I probably would keep Brazilian Bum Bum Cream as a bit of a ‘special occasion’ product, rotating it with a cheaper everyday cream the rest of the time.

I’ll wheel it out to prep skin before a beach holiday, or to make it glow before drinks with friends or date night with my husband. That way every time I indulge in its long-lasting scent and deep moisturising texture, it feels like a treat, and keeps things easy on the wallet too.
