Co-op is selling mac & cheese bites with pigs in blankets inside for Christmas – and we're confused

The supermarket has combined two popular side dishes in one by launching mini portions of macaroni cheese that come with a mini pork sausage wrapped in bacon in the middle.

The Co-op's Irresistible Mac & Pigs – which have six in a pack – will go on sale for Christmas from December 12 for £4 each, or two packs for £7.

The Co-op describes it as "rich, creamy servings of macaroni cheese made with Somerset Vintage Cheddar, double cream and mascarpone" which are "garnished with a mini pork sausage wrapped in succulent smoked bacon".

The combination may be a bit too weird for some, but if you like pigs in blankets and macaroni cheese, it may be worth a try.

Even though pigs in blankets and mac & cheese aren't exactly the healthiest dishes, the bites only contain 71 calories each.

Unlike the Co-op's Spanish-inspired Mini Chorizo in Pancetta pigs in blankets, the Mac & Pigs have not won any taste awards.

Yesterday, the supermarket won in the pigs in blankets category in Good Housekeeping's annual blind taste test for its Spanish take on the traditional Christmas side dish.

If you don't want to pay £4 for the unusual bites, you could try making them yourself at home.

A packet of Kraft Classic Macaroni Cheese can cost as little as 79p, while Asda sells a frozen packet of 12 pigs in blankets for £1.75.

You could cook them separately and then combine them to create your own festive bite, and save some money.

In other festive food news, you can buy Asda's foot-long pigs in blankets free if you sign up to TopCashback.

Meanwhile Walkers has launched a Christmas range of crisps in festive flavours such as brussels sprouts and pigs in blankets.
