My eldest daughter and I were close. She is football-mad and I used to drive her around everywhere for matches.
I loved cheering for her from the sidelines. Everyone said she was a daddy’s girl. But since her mum and I split up when she was 11, our relationship has gone downhill.
Her mum often made access difficult and would try to cancel visits at the last minute but I always managed to see her. But when I remarried and moved away last year, things really nosedived.
I didn’t want to move but I lost my job and felt I had no choice. To provide for my new family and my daughter, I had to follow the work.
But my daughter refuses to accept this explanation. She is now refusing to see me and says she hates me. What can I do to put it right?
DEIDRE SAYS: Your daughter is going through difficult teenage years with the added angst of – in her eyes, at least – losing her father.
Don’t give up or walk away. Keep reassuring her you will always be there for her.
As she matures, she will come to understand the difficult decisions you made. My support pack Troubled Teens will help.
