I relied on my son too much when my husband was ill – he is still single at 27

DEAR DEIDRE: I’M to blame for my son struggling to find a girlfriend.

When my husband became ill with MS 15 years ago, we became so close. It was a happy family but my lad has had to do a lot of jobs that my husband would normally do.

Now he can’t seem to find somebody special.

We are still close but he has never left home. He is 27 and is feeling low because he’s not in a relationship.

My husband is 58 and I am 53. I relied on my son an awful lot and perhaps it was too much for him.

He had to grow up really quickly and I worry I didn’t allow him enough time to be with friends his own age. Did I do something wrong?

DEIDRE SAYS: No. It is wonderful you are so close. There are plenty of 27-year-olds still living with their parents and when he is ready to share his life with somebody special, I’m sure he will make that move.

The pandemic has halted dating but the restrictions are now lifting, so you can encourage him to get out and meet friends and network.

My support pack, Widening Your Social Scene, might also help him find someone.
