Oscars 2020 pays tribute to late Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas

The Oscars 2020 paid tribute to Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas during their In Memoriam segment at this year’s event.

Kirk died at the age of 103 on Thursday 6 February, just a few days before the awards ceremony, and was even considered the last surviving link to the golden age of Hollywood studio filmmaking.

He was best known for his titular role in the 1960 film Spartacus as well as his roles in Ace in the Hole and Paths of Glory.

Billie Eilish sang a beautiful rendition of the Beatles’ Yesterday during the annual In Memoriam sequence honouring the movie industry’s departed and many names were mentioned.

Steven Spielberg introduced the segment and described them in his introduction before names began rolling across the screen, starting with Kobe Bryant, the Lakers legend who died in a helicopter crash on 26 January, and ending with Kirk.

Between the two stars came mentions of Rip Torn, Diahann Carroll, Robert Forster, Andre Previn, Doris Day, Peter Fonda, John Singleton, Godfrey Gao and many others.

When Kirk passed, his son, actor Michael Douglas, posted on Instagram: ‘It is with tremendous sadness that my brothers and I announce that Kirk Douglas left us today at the age of 103.

‘To the world, he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and the causes he believed in set a standard for all of us to aspire to. But to me and my brothers Joel and Peter he was simply Dad, to Catherine, a wonderful father-in-law, to his grandchildren and great grandchild their loving grandfather, and to his wife Anne, a wonderful husband.

‘Kirk’s life was well lived, and he leaves a legacy in film that will endure for generations to come, and a history as a renowned philanthropist who worked to aid the public and bring peace to the planet.

‘Let me end with the words I told him on his last birthday and which will always remain true. Dad – I love you so much and I am so proud to be your son.’ Douglas celebrated his 103rd birthday in December 2019.

Meanwhile, Kirk’s funeral was held on Friday 7 February, with Catherine Zeta-Jones, Stephen Spielberg and Kirk’s 100-year-old wife Anne being among the many who attended.
