Aaron Eckhart Praises Heath Ledger & Joaquin Phoenix Joker Portrayals

Joaquin Phoenix has received plenty of praise for his performance as the Clown Prince of Crime in Joker, which hit the big screens last month.

Phoenix’s portrayal of Batman’s archenemy comes 11 years after the release of The Dark Knight, in which the late Heath Ledger portrayed Joker – where he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

19 years before Ledger’s portrayal hit theaters, the legendary Jack Nicholson had performed as Joker in Batman (1989). It’s simply safe to say that Phoenix successfully followed the footsteps of both Nicholson and Ledger in portraying the iconic DC villain.

Aaron Eckhart, who portrayed Harvey Dent/Two-Face in The Dark Knight, got to witness Ledger’s Joker performance firsthand. How does Eckhart view Phoenix’s version of the character? He explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“I think Heath and Joaquin are showing the way,” Eckhart said. “They’re showing the way in the sense that they’re just being very real and that they go all the way into the bottom of their soul and find where it comes from and they give it to us. That’s what those guys did and I think audiences appreciate that the most.”

Joker has now hit $1 billion at the box office. Director Todd Phillips recently stated that he and Phoenix discussed “a sequel on set.” Nothing has been confirmed yet, but given the positive reviews and major box office success, there’s good reason for optimism that a sequel will take place.

But with Bruce, Thomas and Martha Wayne (and Alfred Pennyworth) all appearing in Joker, it certainly sets up the opportunity for Phoenix and Pattinson to clash in a future film. Only time will tell how things play out.

Instead of coming face-to-face with Joker in The Batman, the World’s Greatest Detective will go up against Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman and Paul Dano’s Ridlder. Colin Farrell and Matthew McConaughey have also been rumored to portray Penguin and Two-Face, respectively, in The Batman. We’ll find out soon enough if they end up joining the quest of Riddler and Catwoman to take down Batman.
