BBC Breakfast star Ben Thompson hit back at Sally Nugent, claiming she was "building it up too much" as he prepared to open a segment.

Sally, 51, resumed her usual spot on the red sofa on Monday (July 17) while Ben stepped in for Jon Kay for the second week running as he continues his holiday.

During the first instalment of the week, one headline was American rapper Lizzo playing the flute at one of her concerts.

"Now, should we talk about this?," Ben asked as he turned his head towards Sally.

To which she responded: "Go on, it's your moment!"

The presenter insisted: "It's not my moment! You're building it up too much," before footage of the 35-year-"devoted flautist" began playing on-screen.

But Ben's time to shine came afterwards when they welcomed Amina Hussain, who is Principal Flute at Manchester Camerata orchestra, onto the red sofa.

Noting that Lizzo's contribution has put the flute "on the map", she admitted the singer has a "unique selling point" that will help inspire more children to play the instrument.

She then did her own brief performance of Lizzo's hit track Juice, on the flute, leaving both Ben and Sally in awe.

Ben then pulled out a flute from behind the red sofa as Sally chipped in: "There's only one flute everybody. Isn't that a shame".

"I'm willing to share," laughed Ben before the mum-of-one insisted: "No thanks!"

He then raised the instrument to his mouth and attempted to play, but unfortunately for Ben, it didn't quite match up to Amina's performance.

As he giggled his way through, Sally said: "Well we do have a news programme to present!"

Fans can expect Ben and Sally on their screens for another two days before Jon returns from his planned break.

Sharing the news of his holiday with fans on July 10, he wrote on Twitter: “Enjoying some extra sleep and long-planned annual leave with the family, so no need to set my alarm clock tomorrow morning. Back on the red sofa with my BBC Breakfast family in Salford in two weeks’ time.”
