BBC Breakfast star Dan Walker has announced he is "very sad" that his red sofa co-host Louise Minchin is leaving the show.

The morning presenter, who is soon about to make his Strictly Come Dancing debut, opened up about his feelings about Louise quitting the programme after an incredible 20 years.

During a candid Q&A on his Instagram Stories, Dan was quizzed: "Are you happy with your partner in Strictly and why is Louise leaving?”

He responded: "Delighted with [dancing emoji] but very sad about Louise. Going to be a tough one tomorrow."

And Dan teased a huge surprise waiting for Louise on Wednesday, which will be her last ever day on the BBC Breakfast sofa.

Another fan asked him: "Did you buy Louise a leaving present or will it be a last minute decision?"

The former Football Focus host typed in response: "I’m normally a last-minute monger but I’m actually quite proud of myself.

"I’ve been planning it for ages. I hope she likes it. You’ll have to watch tomorrow," he teased.

It comes after Dan made a cheeky quip over the ‘pressure’ of picking out the perfect gift for Louise.

Speaking to Morning Live hosts Gethin Jones and Janette Manrara about what was coming up on the programme, Louise was delighted as she thanked the duo for their "thoughtful present" of a pair of swimming goggles.

Dan added: "Well this is the problem right, I gave it to her today and I said 'this is a lovely present from Gethin and Janette and the whole team at Morning Live and she just opened it straight away."

Gethin replied: "It's just to say 'good luck'. I know you're going to be doing a lot of triathlons after you finish so we're sending you lots of love."

Dan cheekily quipped: "You’ve put the pressure on for my prezzie tomorrow now!"

Earlier in the day, Dan also reposted a snap of him and Louise hanging out on the red sofa, with the star writing: "Good morning, I can’t quite believe it, this is my penultimate sofa selfie. I am taking deep breaths. #BBCBreakfast."

Louise looked stunning as ever with her blonde bob straightened to perfection, wearing a black top with white stars.

Dan, meanwhile, opted for his usual suit and tie combo, matching a navy blue blazer with a scarlet tie and pocket square.

A clearly emotional Dan added his own caption to the sweet snap, begging Louise: "DON’T LEAVE ME!"

Fans echoed Dan’s sentiment in the comments section, with one writing: "Louise! Please don’t leave us! Dan! Please don’t leave us! Love watching you 2… part of my morning routine when preparing for work!"

Someone else followed up: "Good luck Louise, we will miss you!"

"Don’t leave, Louise – the perfect team!" another fan said, while someone else posted: "I will miss you but do wish you all the very best. Dan, deep breaths my friend!"
