Emmerdale fans beg for Eli Dingle to return to ITV soap for brother Marlon

Emmerdale fans have begun making a public plea to the ITV soap's favourite Eli Dingle to return.

Fans are hoping Eli, last played by Joe Gilgun before he departed in 2010, will make a comeback to the Dales to by his brother Marlon's side.

Marlon's life changed forever after he proposed to Rhona Goskirk last week. But, his dreams soon came crashing down as, shortly after, he collapsed at home and suffered a stroke, in heartbreaking scenes that were praised by many including Phillip Schofield.

The Woolpack's chef, played by Mark Charnock, was rushed to hospital and is currently struggling to speak, move or eat by himself.

As his family have rallied around him Marlon's best pal Paddy Dingle, played by Dominic Brunt, has shied away as he's found himself unable to cope with the reality of Marlon's condition – leaving Rhona, played by Zoe Henry, frustrated by the lack of support from Paddy.

While Marlon remains in hospital, some fans are thinking it's only right for family members who have since left the Dales to make a return to support Marlon. And his younger brother Eli is facing many calls from viewers to comeback and be there for his older sibling.

During his time on the ITV soap, Eli was involved in some pretty divisive storylines – including fights with Zak Dingle, kidnapping Marlon, who he dangled off the side of a building before he fled the village for good.

Actor Joe has since gone on to play Vinnie O'Neill in Sky One comedy Brassic. But, fans want him back in the village.

One viewer urged on Twitter: "Oh Eli come back! But then I love #Brassic too much!!! The only character I really want back though. #BringBackEliDingle."

While another added that it would be an opportunity for Malon's daughter April, played by Amelia Flanagan, to start asking about her uncle.

They wrote: "Think its about time April asked why she's never met her Uncle Eli, Uncle Scott or Auntie Kelly! Now there’s a good combination of Aunties and Uncles!"

A third fan admitted: "Just watching Brassic makes me miss Joe Gilgun in Emmerdale and want Eli Dingle back so bad."

Meanwhile, in moving scenes on Thursday's stint of the soap, viewers saw Paddy finally make the move to visit Marlon in hospital.

Paddy began the visit by filling the room with small talk, still cringing over his part in the Dingle family video intended to boost Marlon's spirits, before he was shut up by Marlon with a look.

Marlon's pal then responded by admitting he's never known a friend who has had a stroke before and added: "I literally don't know how to behave."

Paddy popped out to get some drinks and Marlon asked his nurse to write a note back to his best mate, which he directed him to upon his return. It read: "I've never had a stroke before. I don't know how to behave either."
