Kate Garraway’s son Billy was ‘emotional’ at birthday without dad Derek

Kate Garraway has revealed that her son Billy was ‘overwhelmed and emotional’ as he celebrated his first birthday without his father Derek Draper, who remains in hospital.

Billy celebrated his 11th birthday on Saturday with an I’m A Celebrity-themed party hosted by mum Kate in their back garden.

Several of Billy’s friends attended and hung out in a large tent, while Kate’s I’m A Celeb pal Roman Kemp made an appearance and entertained the youngsters.

Recalling her son’s special day, Kate said on Good Morning Britain on Monday: ‘It’s like the queen I told him, with all the challenges with mixing, he’s having four birthdays, the first was with his friends on Saturday.

‘Global [Radio] provided a cake delivered by Roman and Martin Kemp.’

Kate, who returned to work on GMB last week, continued: ‘We had a fantastic camp out in the garden in a huge tent which allowed them [the kids] to be separate. [Billy] was completely overwhelmed.

‘Bill absolutely loved it, he was completely overwhelmed and a bit emotional. But we said we’ll do it again when his dad comes out.’

Derek has been in hospital since March after being diagnosed with coronavirus and being put in a medically induced coma. Earlier this month, Kate revealed that Derek had opened his eyes and was now out of his deep coma and is now in a minimal state of consciousness.

Before welcoming guests into Billy’s party, Kate wrote in an Instagram post: ‘Kate told her followers: ‘The calm before the storm for Bill’s birthday! A more luxurious camp than mine in the jungle!’

She admitted she was nervous about the prospect of a birthday without his dad Derek at home, writing: ‘So I was super nervous about Bill’s birthday this year – we usually have a family do with grandparents & a few of his friends but obviously this not possible.’

During Monday’s GMB, Kate also revealed that Billy and his sister Darcey are begging her for a dog to keep them occupied during the summer holidays.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
